Hi,

A quick question...any help much appreciated!

I work for myself and to date have been based at home. I bought a copy of MS Office 2003 for my desktop and have been using it for the last year or so.

From next week I need to be working off-site and have bought a laptop. I'd like to keep MS Office on my desktop but need it on the laptop for when I'm out and about. I am the only person in the company and am the only person that will be using these computers.

Can I install and use my existing copy of MS Office on the laptop?

Cheers

Can I use my

Check the EULA for this line
‘If you run a business or enterprise, you may install a second copy of the Software Product on a portable Device owned by you for the exclusive use of the person within your business or enterprise who is the user of the primary copy of the Software Product, provided that such person only uses the second copy for business purposes.’

IIRC this will be allowed for Retail, but not for OEM.

Is there something in the license that stops you say installing it on 1 server and allowing 50 other network computers to run it from the server?

I doubt that's even possible, unless you use something like Terminal Services, in which case you need a license for every TS cal in use.

Yes, like has been said you'd need CALs for all connecting users.

I have m$ office 2003 installed on my pc, and I can run it from the laptop just by using a shortcut to it.

As an alternative to Section 1.1(a), you may install a copy of the Software on a network storage device, such as a server computer, and allow one access device, such as a personal computer, to access and use that licensed copy of the Software over a private network. You must obtain a license to the Software for each additional device that accesses and uses the Software installed on the network storage device, except as permitted by Section 1.4 of this EULA.

So same rules apply as with a TS installation

Come to think of it though it seems open to abuse, as a company could just install one copy, have all its users access it, and there wouldn't be any evidence of them using it if someone inspected the computers. In any case the admin could just say that it was an unathorised access if someone mentioned it.

Doesn't matter if it was unauthorised use, they could still be fined.

TS CAL's and most other MS CAL's are based on trust.
We operate from TS with MS Office 2003 installed on the TS. Everyone connects to it and uses office.
Unfortunately i inherited this system and there were not enough CAL's installed to legally accommodate all the users.
They could still use it no problem. But now i've bought more CAL's so we're all sorted now.

User CAL's are a bind to keep track of, especially when using servers & terminal services, there are so many potential pitfalls, and its totally understandable that people don't know what CAL's are needed for what software. Even MS get confused. I've had differing advice from 4 people at MS over the same question
