MS Word query ...

I need to write an article for college and I'm trying to start it with a big bold letter like you see in newspapers with smaller text surrounding it. I'm using Word 2007 if that's any help. Thanks in advance folks.

If I understand your request correctly then you want a "drop cap". See here.

In short (For Word 2007), check out "Drop cap" within "Text" on the "Insert" tab. Or Alt N RC <Down> <Enter>
