is there anything like msconfig on ubuntu? cause i notices booting up takes ages and i dought i need all of it as all i need it for is to use internet banking and buying things online as linux is more secure. and while i'm here any one mind explaining what makes linux more secure?

also any services that will make booting up much faster and i don't need for web browsing?

If you want to examine what your PC is doing whilst Linux is booting up then have a look at something called Boot Chart (www.bootchart.org).

It produces a graphical representation of the boot-up process, so you can see what order things are started, what dependencies exist, etc...

Here's a screenshot: http://www.bootchart.org/images/bootchart.png

It's so much better than Microsoft's BootVis, imo, cause you get much more information.

ps - services are used in Windows... Linux uses daemons.

Also, I'd suggest you have a read of this article that GraemeUK posted in another thread - it covers lots of info you should know about securing your Ubuntu installation.
