MSE or Avast

Ive gone from Avast Internet Security (paid) to MSE because Avast blocked all email ports - incoming & out. Even after allowing. MSE seems ok and found a 'nasty file' so Im happy that it works fine. As someone said its a pita on updating but I can live with it.

been using MSE for long time, switched to avast early last night to see if its good.

first thing i notice is small lag from laptop when finish download exe or zip files, but apart from that its alright. will see how its go in next few days.

Free, I pick MSE over all other AVs. Its worked well for me but after initial install the updates are quite large. Not noticed/felt it's resource heavy & that's across different specs including a single-core netbook

Can anyone tell me if Avast can be configured to be more-or-less invisible? The last time I tried it, it irritated me with its constant pop-ups about definition updates, etc.

You can configure how long these pop-ups stay on screen for in terms of seconds, so I guess you could just specify '0' or turn the notification off completely.

This. Just plain confuses me that most people think MSE is lightweight. While in fact it is shockingly aggressive with executable scanning (literally EVERYTHING, running or not, that is so much as accessed), incredibly slow at scanning and a huge CPU drain.

No it isn't. If it drains your CPU then you need a better PC, or have better PC maintenance.

MSE runs perfectly fine on all the machines at home, one of them an ION based HTPC.

I used to run Avast v5 on them since release and AVAST v4.x before that but MSE is more thorough without being a hog and while AVAST is great as well, MSE is just a neater package without all the resident shields to click through that AVAST has.

I found no problems with either when it came to detecting and removing malware on various machines.

Thanks - just swapped MSE for Avast. All good so far - it's using 23MB of RAM where MSE used 70, and a study I read suggests that Avast has a better detection rate.

Urgh. Avast just updated definitions. Not only a huge pop-up that you have to click away, but also a tacky sound effect voiced by a woman who sounds like she's inhaled helium.

I've put the 'silent' mode on, but that doesn't even notify you when you get a virus! Is some middle ground too much of an ask?

[edit] Aha. You can turn off the update pop-up. Let's hope it disables the sound effect too...
