Hi there,
Just recently installed Microsoft security essentials and enabled windows firewall, I'm impressed so far but is it an effective security solution?
Thanks in advance for replies.

Yes.

Especially if you run in a Standard User mode for day to day running of your machine. Common sense is also a powerful tool.

I think the windows firewall is good, but the advanced security snap in is too hard to understand for basic users.

Not used MSE much, does it still break the windows defender links in control panel?

Thanks guys, do you think I would need any other security programs to compliment them or will these two do fine?

spyware blaster (it helps prevent against bad programs, and doesn't run all the time, it just closes off registry areas to certain software)

also, Spybot S&D, update then 'Immunize' -does similar to above.

For browsing, I recommend using either Firefox or Chrome, in Firefox, install 'adblock plus' with 'Easylist'. In Chrome, install Adblock

Is adblock a good preventative against malware due to it being served through banner ads and the like? And does it completely remove them all?

I ask because I like to see banner ads and and promotions due to an interest in internet marketing, but I'm always game for reducing malware risk. Do they have a list that only blocks what they think are malicious IPs as opposed to all ads or something like that? (Not really sure how it works)

MSE and Windows firewall is what I use as well, and I've had no problems.

I also have Malwarebytes as it seems to be the best on demand scanner.

Spybot as well, will remove tracking cookies and other low risk stuff.

Comodo free firewall best free firewall in its class.

Windows firewall doesnt block out going connection as far as i know.

I would feel naked using the windows firewall.

Yes it does and it's fully featured pretty much via the Firewall CPL in Win7, many many options for inbound and outbound. What you know is old news :p

I thought this discussion was about WIn7 not XP, there is no mention of XP in this thread and why would there be!.

Anyway, everyone has an opinion but yours in this case is wrong regarding Windows Firewall.

Lets not bring this down to a troll fest.

All I said was that there are great free firewall's available on the web.

Thats all.

Microsoft do not have a good reputation when it comes to security. so using something other than a microsoft peice of software is advisable.

I use comodo, its fantastic, and has been voted top free firewall numerous times.

Its only advise.

Seems you're the one trolling here.

What evidence suggests MS don't have suitable security?

MS Firewall is very good. MSE is very good.

Both can be used in conjunction with an up to date Win7 and you're going to be safely protected at all times. That is the whole point.

This so called bad reputation you mention is long gone, either you've been living under a rock or you're trolling.

To echo what Khan said, MSE + Windows Firewall is very good and caught plenty of threats since using it. I haven't had a single issue with resources, infections or conflicts with other apps.

I think its a lot better than 10 years ago, which is where you seem to be drawing a fair amount of your information from?

You use Win 7 too by the looks of your signature?

It might be beside the point but software firewalls are pretty useless from a decent attack anyway.

Most of the time they serve to annoy me rather than do any good :)
