Hi folks

I have seen a few mentions here and there on the forum re. looking at the MSI 27" MAG 274QRF.

Its currently on offer at £198 but sold out at OC and pretty much everywhere. I have put in a pre-order via OC but apparently it wont be in stock for several weeks. From what I have read it looks good for the price, but I would appreciate any feedback from those who have one!

There is a very similar curved version for pretty much the same price - my TV is curved and ive always been pretty ambivalent on that feature, but I use my monitors for working from home and wasn't sure if that might be mildly annoying for spreadsheets etc so passed

ive got last years model if you can call it that

when i was looking around, the msi was the top of every review list
£500 at the time

mine :

I appreciate the feedback! Though even at full price this one was quite a bit cheaper than 500 so likely lower spec!

Looking at getting one of these (MAG 274QRF QD E2). Can I ask a couple of questions?

How easy/quick is it to change the source?
I flick between the source of my work laptop, and then to my home PCs (HDMI KVM). It's important to me that this can be done quickly and easily, and not by multiple difficult key presses. My current monitor takes only KEY X, KEY X, KEY Y, KEY X, which can be done in a second or so.

The manual seems to imply you can possibly alter the behaviour of the "Navi Key". Can you make it really easy to get to the source menu via this? ie: A single press gets you to the source menu?

USB-C video?
I assume I can feed my laptop's image of the USB-C port? DP Alt Mode?

This is an upgrade to my aging ASUS PB278QV - https://www.asus.com/uk/displays-desktops/monitors/all-series/pb278qv/

I bought one in the black Friday deal a week or so back. I bought as a second monitor but it's ridiculously good for the price. Fully featured (as long as you ignore HDR, which is predictably pants) and looks great straight out of the box. For under 200 it's a steal.

So, a subjective question, but if I grab one of these, will I notice much of an upgrade from my existing 5yr old Asus PB278QV?

Hate to spend £200 and see it basically as a side ways move with little noticable improvement...

It would depend on how much you value the increased refresh rate and variable refresh rate. If I were in your position, I would go for it personally but that's just my take.

My current monitor seems fine with things like RDR2, L4D2 and Helldivers 2 vsync'd at 75fps. Seems perfectly smooth.

The odd ball is COD DMZ which I seem to come to the solution of running at a set frame limit of 120fps without vsync to get the smoothest I can, yet it doesn't feel as smooth as say Hell Divers 2 does at 75fps. Odd!

Given I'll be running through an Aten CS1820 4K HDMI KVM (capable of 144hz) but I'm not sure if that will allow me to utilise freesync or g-sync. Maybe freesync?

My concern is if it's just FPS that's the difference, will I notice a monitor refresh increase in games from 75fps to say 120-144fps? And from the specs, the colour/contract/clarity will see little/no difference?

I think you'll find the colours pop more as it has more saturated colours compared to my old IPS. So much so that I had to tone it down a bit as it was a bit jarring.

going from 75hz to 144Hz should absolutely be noticeable in games if your can drive that many fps, motion clarity should be improved with the lower response time for fast moving games like COD.

For the money this is a good monitor but I do notice more shift in colours on it than my old IPS if im looking at it from any other direction than straight on. Another annoyance is that is doesn't have a on/off switch you can just press, to turn the screen off you have to reach round the back and hold down the joystick for 5 seconds. I actually find that more annoying than I thought I would when I've got so used over the years of just quickly hitting the off button if i was going away from my PC.

I never turn my monitor off. It's plugged into the KVM which is rarely switched to my gaming PC, and mostly switch to the family server, which is on most of the time. As long as the PC displays/monitor times out to a blank screen after a period of no use, fine!

As long as I can switch sources on the monitor easily, with an easy set of button presses, fine. Looks like you can short cut the "Navi Button" to "source" so a quick reach around the rear right and a couple of simple presses should make changing source quick/easy - This will be for the couple of times a day switch between my work PC (as a second monitor on DVI or USB-C?) and my KVM (with server/game PC on HDMI.)

Yeah as said, the colours do pop a bit more but I can't say if it's specific to that monitor. The refresh rate is the killer spec for me, I always find the jump from 75 to 120+ to be massive, but that's just me. I'd be extremely surprised if you don't see the difference. Even if you're not at 180fps you'll feel a difference in motion clarity.

Of course it depends on what's driving it, but I would rather my PC be the limiting factor than the monitor.

Glad I saw this thread. I've been thinking about upgrading from my 15 year old Dell (U2311H), which has been solid (and still is), but curious as to what a higher frame rate looks like! I was thinking of just getting another 24" 1080p monitor and 144 or higher refresh rate, as I only have a GTX980, but I think I'll bite the bullet with a 27" 1440p monitor, and upgrade the GPU at a later stage. I was looking at various AOC, BenQ, Acer monitors, but this looks like a great deal for only £200, especially if it's being recommended by a few people in here.

I don't play many games, mainly just League of Legends :o but want to pick up Baldurs Gate 3 at some point, and play more of the endless Steam games I have in my library.

That's encouraging! Apparently my preorder is shipping today

I had two old monitors which would have been basic when they were new. I upgraded one to a modern (but very cheap) version last year when one of the ancient ones broke and the difference was night and day.

Hoping that treating myself to this one (198 is a lot for me for a monitor but apparently they get much much more expensive than this) to replace the last remaining ancient screen, the difference will be even greater

I remember paying over £400 for an Asus 24" 1440p 144hz monitor with no VRR about 7ish years ago... So yeah, given that, this is a good deal ;)

Shows how far panel tech has moved along in a relatively short space of time.

Tvs seem to be one of the few things In the world that get cheaper as time goes on

That's good to know, hopefully when I get around to upgrading, I can see a big difference! The Dell was £260 when I bought it back in 2009 so that was a lot! I hadn't spent even half that on a monitor before that one.
