MSI 290/290X Gaming Edition Thread

Good find Scotty. That's the first review ive seen of this card.

For the love of god i can't understand why Guru3D (or some other sites for that matter) insist on disabling TressFX or using Bioshocks DDOF filter (which does nothing for image quality and just blurs the image + favours Nvidia cards) otherwise a couple of those results (Tomb Raider and Bioshock) would look very different.

Didn't realise the lead in BF4 was that big.

680 beat by a stock 7950? Damn, that's pretty impressive.

Mine idles at 38, hit 80 on Heaven :(. Room temp is normal. Was hoping to crossfire sometime down the road but two of these right next to each other? Probably would be very hot. Stock speeds btw.. kinda regret not going with the tri-x now ..

Try changing the thermal paste and do it back up nice and tight. Sounds like a bad paste job. Use a quality paste like Gelid or MX2/4 and see what difference it makes. It will not void your warranty with OcuK so long as you don't damage the card in the process.

Hitting 80c is nothing to worry about.

As long as you have decent air flow in your case?

Plus you can always set a custom fan profile with a higher fan speed if you want your temps a bit lower.

Mine is 28 idle today but its fairly cold in the room. I would follow Matts advice with the thermal paste, 10 degrees at idle is a fair difference.

Mine idles at 39c and load 75c. It's with +50 power, 1.1ghz on gpu, fan on auto, But I only have Few case Fans to keep pc silent and the temp is low enough

I'd rather not mess up with thermal paste/don't have the time atm. Today I'll try OCing and see how it goes. If temps would be too much I'll probably return it and get the Tri-X instead. CFX is very important to me and givin I don't have the best case cooling I probably should had opted with the Tri-X from the first place.

Anybody knows if the discount currently going on the Tri-X is gona go off soon?

This can t be...
Look @ the Asus 290 DCUII (1000MHz).
It needs 42% more FPS to be on par with the MSI 290X.
There must be something wrong.
Mostly always same FPS with the 290 Reference Card(947 MHz)

I bet the 290 and Asus 290 in those benches are throttling. The Asus 290 DC has a quiet mode i believe. Either way the Asus DC 290 cards are stinky. Pick a different brand.

I thought that too, but watch the thermal analysis, card hit s 73°C.
I cant believe that they measuring Temps and Game Performance with different Bios modes.
I posted the same in german forum that it is eventually quiet mode and is throttling, but i dont know...

Why are there little to no reviews of this card? Hasn't it been out for a little while now.

We've had all the stock! :D

I shall try to get my small review posted up tonight, keep forgetting to do it, but its just benchmarks and some overclocking.

In short they are great cards! Very quiet.

Their weakness is being too quiet, so when two or more closely together they can throttle, but as a single card its one of the best choices. :)

Cheers Gibbo, I haven't taken mine out for a spin with games yet. I might try Tomb Raider again :D.

It's a brilliant card, much quieter than my short lived 7970 GE.

Anyone running one of these in crossfire? Tempted to get a second but worried it'd be too hot. If it's the case I'll probably end up getting 2 Sapphire cards. :(

You'll likely need two slots between the cards. Side exhaust fans on your case will help, as will removing pci brackets around the rear of the cards and having a positive pressure case. to ensure hot air is naturally forced out of every orifice.

Just got one of these MSI cards today (290x), so far so good. the fan doesn't seem to spin up a fraction as high now whilst playing Tombraider, it's much more silent. Not sure if that was down to having a dodgy Gigabyte GPU or not though. No crashes as of yet (touch me wood).
