Been playing Doom4 on ultra settings @2560x1600
Mostly fine at around 70fps ish depending on map etc
Been noticing that temps are staying mostly at 93oC and 100% gpu usage
slight oc to 1050 on clock,mem@1250

16GB @2400 ram
TX850 watt corsair psu
CM Haf 935 case

Is it worth reapplying the tim on the card?Would it drop temps?
Just had a refund on my tax :D so am REALLY tempted for a 1070:p
Opinions please :)

I wouldn't bother messing around with the TIM if you can just buy a nice new 1070. The MSI cooler on those 290/X cards was always pretty crap for an aftermarket cooled card, although 93 Celsius is definitely higher than I ever saw my old MSI 290 reach even with 1150 overclock on the core.

So yeah, if you can afford the newer better and cooler card, then definitely I would get one. :p

I was in a very similar boat, MSI 390X (almost identical to yours but with more VRAM).

Nothing you do to the card will reduce the amount of heat it produces. I wasn't prepared to put up with it's massive heat output and noise anymore. Watercooling a card of £100-150 value just isn't worth it.

I upgraded to a 1070 FE (wanted a blower) and couldn't be happier. The heat output is massively reduced (150W TDP on the 1070, vs 300+ on my 390x). The card is very quiet, even at full load. I even gave up freesync, and can honest say that getting pretty much double the FPS in many games more than makes up for it.

tbh id be tempted to try replacing the thermal paste like you said, i was in a similar boar with my 290 tri-x it was hitting 95 degrees at times and throttling , when i finally took the cooler off and redid the paste it literally knocked 10oc off at full load

My MSI 290x gaming sat at those temps on stock clocks, A tim change still left it above 90, I owned an MSI 4gb GTX 770 gaming before buying the 290x gaming and it was identical even down to the heatsink which is woefully inadequate for Hawaii.

Even if you reduce the temperatures, the card is still pumping out 300W+ of heat.

Could you clarify what model is the MSI 290x? Is it a card with reference cooler or with a custom cooler? I think something is definitely wrong with those temp if it is with a custom cooler.

Even if you reduce the temperatures, the card is still pumping out 300W+ of heat.
For gaming in general it doesn't...it is only when the card is overclocked and with voltage bumped up that it might happen. The typical highest power-consumption without increasing voltage I see with GPU-Z is only around 250-280W.

Try undervolting.

I have my MSI GE 290 @ -37mv, iirc, I went from a max fan speed of about 70+% and 80+ temps to a max fan speed of 50% and a max temp of 73

Not tried undervolting, don`t know how to try atm
Card is msi 290X gaming 4GB onboard ram
Think I will give a go at reapplying tim in a little while
I had the card second hand about 12-18 months ago and I `think` I remember the guy saying he had it from somebody else and that they had reapplied tim

There should be no way that with that cooler the temp would reach that high even with average TIM...it should either be the case of the heatsink is not making proper contact, or problems with the fans, or there's not sufficient cool air intake into the case for the cooler to do its job.

You might want to have a look at the fans to make sure they are spending properly and is not at a very low rpm first.

Might aswell try everything, change the TIM check the fans profile and then undervolt it. The worst that can happen is you end up with a new 1070 :), the best is you get lower temps and save your self a bit of money as it seems like your getting nice performance from that card on doom anyway.

My MSi 290X (1080 on the core) hit around 86, on a manual fan speed of 80%, and that was in my massive NZXT Phantom 820. :D

Just get a 1070, you know you want to :p

Fans on gpu run fine.i.e. fast and loud under pressure/high use(hot air is exhuasted from back of gpu)
Case has all fans running on high(lot of big fans in this case)
Tried undervolting via afterburner, max temps reached was 83 oC so some improvement I think
It is only now that temps have increased due to me playing Doom4,i usually play L4D or HL2,older type games

Will leave it for tonight and I think I will have a go at reapplying the tim tomorrow :D
Thanks for the suggestions

Yeah i know i want a 1070 :D
Just trying/playing around (damn Doom making me want to upgrade :( )

I had a 290 gaming for a week before returning it cause of the heat and noise. It was unbearable.

One thing I noticed with my MSI 290X was that each new driver update seemed to nudge up the temps, the newest drivers made it the worse!.
Like you I hit 90C when playing Arma 3.

As others have said undervolting will help.

My fix bought a 1070= bliss.
