Hi all

Could i just get a sanity check from the forum?

I bought my son an MSI R9 390 to replace his 7870. I did a fresh Win 8.1 install with the old card and it worked flawlessly. Stuck in the 390 and once it gets into Windows it blackscreens. When starting in low res recovery mode it lasts a little longer but eventually black screens. I suspect PSU but wanted to check. I have ordered an 850 gold Corsair in case.

Oneclue might be that as it blackscreens (tm AMD) the fans on the card stop.

Spec is

4690k stock
Maximus Gene VI
500gb Crucial ssd
1tb seagate hybrid
16gb Avexir Red
H100i
Corsair 500w semi modular psu

Many thanks in advance

PSU should be fine, unless you're aiming for overclocks on CPU/GPU, but that should only really fall over under load, not at desktop.

Did you completely uninstall the AMD drivers before swapping the cards over? If not, it's worth uninstalling them (just from Control Panel should be fine, but you can try DDU if the Control Panel option doesn't work), and then installing the drivers specifically for the 390.

Also, if you boot into Safe Mode, does it blackscreen eventually in that? What about leaving the PC running on the BIOS screen? If it blackscreens in either of those, then you know it's not a driver issue and so must be hardware-related.

You are awesome thankyou.

DDU'd, install from CD, now benching! Looks to be about twice as quick fps wise also.

I think the trauma of shoehorning it into an air 240 clouded my judgement.

Thanks again

Glad it worked mate. :) Shoehorning a 390 into an Air 240? I thought I was pushing it getting a Twin Forzr 7950 into a Hadron Air! Hope your son enjoys the card, sound like he's got a VERY nice setup there.
