Hi guys I was looking at getting the following...

Asus P5Q Deluxe (skt 775)
Intel E5300 (Overclock it)
And because I wanted good graphics the MSI 768MB 460 GTX

Is the Mainboard and processor going to bottleneck gaming or will it be fine for the very little gaming I will be doing (Just the odd bit of cod and maybe some C&C)

Thanks ;)

Hi there, are planning to buy the E5300/P5Q, or do you already have these?

If you are planning to buy these, is it on a deal / second-hand, or are you buying retail?

Ill echo what cmndr andi says, the p5q deluxe is one of the best s775 p45 boards available, though id reccomend picking one up second hand as theyre still a bit expensive new, great overclockers board though.

Cheers guys. They are all parts I spotted that I thought were alright. The money save I was going for was the E5300 and the overclock. What ram would be a good with those parts I mentioned and the overclocking without breaking the bank.

Im also wanting to build it in an an INWIN Z638.

Ah, so this is all new?

In that case I would suggest that you go for a AMD system with an Athlon II X3, 4GB DDR3 and an AM3 board. That will make for a solid base of a new gaming system and allow you to do a drop-in hex core CPU upgrade in the future.

As for the graphics, I suggest you wait till later this week and see how the new AMD HD 6850 performs.

Is the case already bought? Also,do you plan to use the included "400W" PSU?

Is the alternate system going to cost me more? And would it be better to put a few more quid in and get a core i3 on a 1156board. Thanks for your advice on graphics I can wait another week to see what these new graphics cards are like - just the prices of the new cards will probably be very pricey for a while.

I havent bought the case yet but I do like the look and the quality of them as I have used them before just not for these components. As for PSU i was planning on getting a corsair 450 - 500 as long as its quite quiet.

Any suggestions would be an immense help to my buying.

Cheers guys.

It will cost about the same, however it will be newer tech, support newer CPUs (Phenom II X6 for example) and run faster. The Athlon II X3 440 costs ~£60, a decent AM3 board costs about the same. As for RAM, will you be needing new RAM (DDR3) or have you got DDR2 you want to reuse? If you have DDR2, then getting an AM2+ board and the same CPU is a great option.

The i3 is also a good option, the CPU itself costs around £80 and a H55 board will run you to £60 - so if need to buy new RAM anyway then this option is only £20 more expensive than an AMD X3. However, if you do already have DDR2 then it will be a fair bit more.

As for PSU, I would probably chose that when you have your graphics option finalised.

I am thinking about getting the i3 setup myself.

i3 + motherboard + ram = about £250 from overclockers (depending on which ones you want you could probably get it down to about £200)

But you can get a Phenom II X4 955BE + motherboard (with USB3.0 and SATA3.0) + ram at that price, and at £290 you can get a i5 760 + motherboard (with USB3.0 and SATA3.0) + ram from OcUK :p

So whats AMD's equivalent to the I3? Is it the 6core Phenom?

Its a tough one - it really depends what you use it for.

If you are mainly doing multi-threaded number crunching then the slightly cheaper Athlon II X4 can beat the i3 - as the i3 is only a hyperthreaded dual core. But the i3 wins in most games.

For most games, the Phenom II X2 will match the i3.

And as suggested by marine - if you can afford the i3 then you can most likely afford a Phenom II X4 (£106) which will perform better than the i3 in both games and applications. Also, the X4 is a quad core - so will be up-to date for longer as game makers are increasingly making use of more than two cores.

Just do add to cmndr_andi. For the same building cost, there's no reason to build a i3 530 build over a Phenom II X4 955BE build...unless all you do is WOW, which the i3 530 would have advantage over the Phenom II X4 955BE, as it can be overclocked to 4.2-4.4GHz, wherease the 955BE can only overclock to 3.8GHz average. WOW is known to use only 1~2 core for dealing with the main demanding tasks, whereas the extra cores only assist in the minor tasks in the background, which barely help (if at all) in reducing the burden on the main core, so a higher speed dual-core would deliver higher frame rate than a shower Quad-core in that game.

not sure yet, too early to tell.

they got a gtx 470 on special sale for £175 today.
i ordered a gigabyte gtx 460 1024mb for £150 still though.
plan on overclocking it to 800/1600/4000

the ati 6xxx series card initial benchmarks are looking very good.
if you are not particular about whether your card is ati or nvidia, wait it out over the weekend and check benchmark reviews for the new cards.

The ATI 6850 costs £150-160, has about the same performance as a GTX460 1024MB (which also costs £150-160).
However the GTX 460 runs cooler, so it should theoretically overclock better than the 6850.

The ATI 6870 costs £200-220, has about the same performance as the GTX470 (also @ £200-220).
Here however the ATI runs much cooler than the nVidia offering.

Thats what I make of the early product reviews anyway.
Looks like it is more a choice of whether you prefer nVidia or ATi, as the cards are very similar price and performance.
