I bought the MSI ATI Radeon HD 5850 Twin FrozR II

Only had it in about 2 weeks and its making a strange noise. When on the windows desktop it's perfectly quiet, however I first noticed that when scrolling on web pages it makes a noise similar to a hard drive when it is reading/writing (It cant be my hard drive, because I tried unplugging it and just using SSD)

I have just downloaded batman lego from steam and the game would not render, just a black screen with instruction pop ups. I have restarted my PC a few times and managed to get it working but now when playing the game the card is making a load pitched squealing noise.

I installed the drivers from the disk originally and then updated the driver from the AMD website I think. Is it dead or something I have done?

If I were you I would RMA too.

Are they supposed to do that or is it a sign of poor quality components? I don't really want to send it back if it's completely harmless/normal.. But I don't want to end up with a dead card in 6 months due to this as I have another one for crossfire when I get my new motherboard and if one goes in 6 months time I might not be able to get another one (I don't like having two different cards)

I read somewhere that a squealing capacitor has a slightly shorter life than not, although it would still see the life of the rest of the other components out.
So, it depends how annoying it is really.

I have exactly the same problem. Exactly as you describe too. RMA I think. Had the card for an hour too. :(

Mine squeals a little while under heavy load (bench test ect) but not really loud, can only hear it if side of case is off.
My 280gtx used to do it as well under full load, and has been doing it for 2 years

I'm trying to diagnose my own problem here. I think it could possibly be the PSU as on my old card when loading up Minecraft (this is the only time when it actually happens mind you) I can still hear a bit of squeal. Nowhere near as loud and it don't do it on other games like CoD4 or CSS benchmark. Did you get a new card OP, if so has it cured it?

Well this noise is unbearable whilst playing games and frustrating while even scrolling down pages so there is clearly a fault. RMA'ing it to be honest. I didn't pay £130 quid for something that makes a horrible noise.

I get squealing with my 4890, like, when scrolling or watching hd youtube video etc.

Its been like that for a while plus its running over 100C.
