MSI 5850 Twin FrozeR Thread Wont run ANY directx 11 games when overclocked :(

Just received my MSI 5850 Twin FrozeR today, so ive clean installed windows and tried out some benchmarks etc to see if all was peachy.

I decided to try out some overclocking.. just a slight overclock to 850/1150

Furmark runs for 30+ happily without causing a driver crash or a system hang, but when i try to run any directx 11 enabled benchmarks/games they freeze within the first few seconds of rendering, then the drivers crash and im back on desktop? Im using the latest catalyst drivers.. any ideas what could be causing this?

Furmark although a good tool to test stability tests the ram more so than anything else. I suggest taking the oc off of the core to see if it's core clocks causing the issue.

I think you just haven't got the overclock stable, because dx11 stress differently to dx9/dx10.

From my experience of overclocking my MSI 5850 Twin FrozR, I can have a overclock setting that's perfertly stable in dx9 games and even Heaven Benchmerk 2.1 in dx11 mode with memory clock at like 1300MHz, but would crash the driver when I run BFBC2 (dx11). What I found/suspect is that dx11 game titles don't like the memory clock higher than 1100MHz, and for my MSI 5850 Twin FrozR, I need slightly higher voltage for BFBC2 than the voltage what's stable in Heaven Benchmark 2.1. Hope this help.

I've got the exact same problem mate, these cards are crap when it comes to overclocking, unfortunately.

I created a custom BIOS based entirely on the stock one with the exception of having overclocking limits set to 1050/1300. It does allow me to avoid using MSI Afterburner profiles that are often a cause of core clock voltage drops that result in instabilities.

It still doesn't help the problem I have with this card, I can run virtually anything out there besides Dx11 titles/benchmarks such as BFBC2 (Vietnam causing the crashes to occur even quicker) or Unigine Tropics 1.3.

Grand Theft Auto 4 can take high overclocks at lower voltage with ease, DirectX 11 applications are the cause of all the freezes and crashes.

My advice is to fine the max stable memory overclock first, without touching the core voltage/clock and with that saved, proceed to step by step overclocking (e.g. find the max stable overclock at stock volts, save, up the voltage by 25mV or 50mV and repeat the process). Make sure to test in DirectX 11 that fully utilise the GPU power.

TL;DR the card is crap.

It would all be fine if it wasn't for the fact that it's only this particular model that does such things. It's by far the worst overclocking 5850 you can get on the market nowadays :)

What about the non-reference ones with no voltage tweak at all? :p

To be fair the previous 5850 you owned was a reference card, and I seen quite a few example of people with non-reference 5850 can't even get pass 800MHz.

We can agree to disagree on this one :p

BTW the previous one I still own, it's in my secondary rig and is coming back right now. Just in time for an aftermarket cooler.

I saw similar behaviour from my msi 5850 - turns out it was the memory clocks. Best stable I can get is 855/1100 @ 1.24v, anything higher and dx11 causes a driver crash and return to desktop or of pushed further a system hang. Try lowering your mem clocks and retest.
