Hi Everyone,
Well I finally replaced a few parts in my system, thanks to all those who gave some advice to me. I am now the proud owner of my cheapest graphics card ever, a 1GB 6850 MSI Cyclone. At £100 its a total bargain imho, now to the hard stuff.
Im using Afterburner Beta 14 to overclock, at the moment I am still at the preliminary stage of finding my max stable overclock for the GPU, NO MEMORY overclocking so far. I can run 940 on the core at stock voltages with fan on auto for 2 hours testing, IDLE TEMP = 34.............MAX 61. So temp wise I think that cooler is working wonders for my card. I am using 1080p 4xFSAA in Kombustor for my stress testing.
I see no pixelation whatsoever, none at all. However at 950 (Stock Volts) I can do about 2 mins, and Kombustor crashes, screen blank, back to windows, not a full system crash.
If I increase the volts to 1180mv from 1149 I can run stable, same test as above at a core clock of 955.
So even though I have no graphical error at all, is this Kombustor crashing a sign that the "Card says NO"?
Would I be right in saying that around 950 - 960 is the max that my card will happily run at, or do you experienced folks think that a voltage increase is in order. I ran at 960 last night for about 10 mins, with a voltage of 1200mv, which was stable, but temps went up to 66.
So really is there a cut off in voltage that I have to say enough is enough? Like diminishing returns? I take it that temps will dictate just how much juice I can give the card.
I dont necessarilly want to game using those speeds, but you know how it is, I want to find the max I can go to. Would it be prudent to use a different stress tester, as in years gone by I have always got artefacts before any system reset / instability.
I know everyone is harping on about 79## series cards at the moment, but for those of us with families and limited budgets, we wanna clock the nuts of our cards and save cash!
Anyway enough rambling, any thoughts on what my next move should be would be greatfully received.
Good day to you all.
Jim
