MSI 7850 question

Ok just plugged in my new msi 7850. Firstly want to say that the box did look like it had been opened before as the plastic was all bent at the corners. But the bag was still sealed with gfx card so i ignored that.

But now i ran the aida64 and gpuz to check the stats on the card and the gpu clock is set at 300mhz and the gpuz memory clock is set at 150mhz.

I found this image of another card and found that it should say 900mhz at least.

Is this some sort of power saving on the new cards that only go up to the full clock speeds when in use or something ?

Yes mate it just clocks down to save power when it isn't needed. Run heaven 3.0 benchmark, and you will see it will clock up to full speed. Let us know how you get on, thanks.

ok i ran a hd video and i can see the clocks go to normal speed. just shows how old my previous card was

:D :D

Isn't it better to just enable the full speed all the time? I am not too concerned with power cost

Not since reviewers started publishing power draw numbers in various card load states ;)

I did not want to make a new thread.

I have this problem in quake live where the chat text and some of the textures on the models are black and flicker. I have not seen this in other games. I have played bf3 and d3 without noticing any issues. Do you think this is a quake live problem or anyone had any thing similar in the past and could offer some pointers?

I am currently using the beta 12.11 beta 6 drivers. I have made a thread on qlive forums but no help so far.

Ok thanks. I will try that.

Another thing I have noticed is that, if i am playing a hd x264 video at 1080p the clock speeds does not increase. This is not in dxva mode i know but still would like to get better clocks speeds when watching x264. Also when watching x264 video and then playing a flash video with the hardware acceleration enabled the flash video stops playing after a few seconds. This defnitely did not happen with my 3850. It looks like it is a problem as a result of this annoying power saving feature. I found this thread on tech power up where i guy found out that when playing games and watching a flash video for music it locks the clock speeds at the mid range flash speed and his game suffers. This is realy annoying imo this clock speed restriction. We can argue all day about if i need full clock speeds for browsing the internet. But my previous card was clocked at 900mhz the whole time, surely this changing from low clock to high clock is going to cause performance issues compared to just running it at full clock speed. So overall not to sure about this power savings bs.

I think is what happend with me, my mobo doesnt like the powersaving mode so it wasnt using the card to its full potential.

How old is your motherboard? Most people seem to get on fine with the 7850 but some mobos dont like them.

Looks like a flash update fixed the stopping problem. Will see how it goes with this power saving stuff

Fingers crossed for you but the flash update i received earlier started causing green screens on flash vids unless you turn off gpu acceleration. That or the new beta drivers, both were installed at the same time.

Its idle so it should clock down?

Means its not working like it should, i dont like that.

I'm drawing a blank here, does memory clock down too? I'm pretty certain it does.

Just because its meant to, doesn't necessarily mean that it'll be a problem if it doesn't. It just mean a little bit more energy is being used and a tad more heat is being produced.
