MSI 7950 Twin Frozr OC - Bit of an odd one

Hello

I received my card on Tuesday along with a new Vertex 3 SSD. I got the card installed and up and running before I started messing about with what I thought would be a headache SSD setup.

I placed the new card in my then current install of Win 7 64 just to check out that it was all good and not DOA.

This initial test seemed all well and good played about 10 minutes of games just to check it was working as should.

Happy with this I proceeded with a fresh install of Windows 7 onto my SSD 20 Minutes later I'm back on the desktop and up and running. I installed the latest 12.8 drivers and rebooted.

On boot I was treated to garbled audio from the HDMI output and screens and pages loading in sections and sluggish screen response at this point I decided to uninstall those drivers and go for the ones on disc, so proceeded with a clean uninstall rebooted and popped the disc in and once loaded rebooted. On boot everything was up and running happily I spent some time again playing a few games whilst updates ran in the background I turned the machine off for the night content that things had been resolved.

At this point I decide to check that everything was seated and held up properly which I am satisfied is the case along with power connectors firmly affixed.

In the morning I continued with my updates. Once windows was finished updating I rebooted, installed some more updates and the service pack then rebooted again. Once this was complete the problem came back. I removed everything and then tried to install 12.8 again. On reboot things were fine. I played games for the next several hours to make sure it was ok whilst observing temps all normal at 48-50.

It struck me as odd that after updates and reboots the problem would occur leading me to believe something was not right in the boot up process. Nothing has been taken out or services stopped. Happy with these checks I then rebooted the machine 10 times over the next hour to see what would happen. All came back each time happy, loaded and graphics capable and enjoyed my Wednesday night.

I came home this evening to the same problem which again I have just resolved by removing all the drivers and re installing along with carrying out several test reboots.

I very much expect this problem to return tomorrow or even tonight however with the information in front of me I am at a loss as to what the issue is. The only answers I can think of is that this may be an issue with the SSD (unlikely as far as I know) or the card is failing or possibly that windows is reinstalling my graphics drivers and creating some kinds of conflict.

This also seems to happen regardless of the version of driver 12.8/12.6 or the supplied discs 12.3

As for my hardware

i7 920@ 3.5GHz
ASUS p6T Deluxe on the latest firmware
OCZ 700w PSU
8gb Ripjaws 1600mhz
128 GB OCZ Vertex 3 SSD
2 x Samsung Spinpoint 1gb in Raid 0

If anyone has any input or ideas I would greatly appreciate them.

Thanks

Update 1:Out of interest and for a larf I went ahead and rebooted, first time the problem is back. I'm in the process now of doing a fresh install onto a regular HDD I have a half baked and unfounded theory that possibly the drivers arent meeting the startup call fast enough to keep up with the SSD and also because the card seemed to run happily the first time on the old HDD installation. I will report back my findings. Should this prove to smooth things out I will proceed with a fresh install onto the SSD as well to review the situation.

So I went ahead and did the install on HDD with all the windows updates on and I am experiencing the same issue. Still looking for a response but I get the feeling the only option is to return.

Continuing to look at some things. But to be clear I have carried out no hardware updates this time around other then the installation of the graphics drivers

I suppose this is something too obvious but have you another gfx card to try as you have already tried another drive for your os?
You have only added/changed two components?

Yup I just put my 2 6870s back into the machine and all is working fine so I dont even think its a power issue. Think this is a one to return. genuinely hope the card is faulty as all avenues exhausted. I did have doubts but I now have enough grounds to believe the card is faulty and looking to return and stick with what I have for the time being.

I had exactly same issues this last week with a sapphire 7950 oc that I just bought from weekly deal. But I never got to play or see after reboot.

I must have done at least 6 clean installs of OS. Deleted drivers the 'AMD WAY', used that poxy drive sweeper and ccleanerbmore times than I care to mention.

Every driver from 12.0 upwards...and nothing, same issue. So probably a dud card, compatiabilty issue.

Desktop welcome was garbled, and was like a slideshow, like 1fps and then BSOD, sounds similar to your issue. I even bought a new motherboard thinking that might be issue.

My NVIDIA last gen card worked perfectly.

I RMA'ed today.

Take my advice , do the same as none I spoke to could find a fix and only advice was 'do a clean install' :-)

Thanks for the input. I sent a webnote early on tonight with the details from this thread. I'm done with MSI sadly, two occasions I have had graphics cards, two occasions they failed to deliver (admittedly the last time was a nvidia 6200gt about ten years ago :P)

Hope you get things sorted
