Hey all,

I have just bought an msi 7950 twin frozr OC which is the new boost edition.

The card is great and runs at 1150 without any issues per se. It is a greatly great card for temps as it never get over 58c.

The issue I have is that after 2-3 mins of using it for gaming/benching the fan speed starts to fluctuate up and down quick quickly and constantly by +/-500 rpm.

The card starts off okay and temps rise to 55c and creep upto 58c. The fan starts about 30% and reaches 47%. However from here on the fan % stays at 47 but the rpm goes up and down constantly. It actually makes it very loud as it revs up to nearly 100% and then back down almost straight away. It almost sound like it is breathing! Just constant up, down with the rpm, it is never steady as I have previously experienced.

I have tried different amd drivers including the beta releases and the msi ones. Nothing makes any difference.

I can set the fan speed manually in CCC, but after the 2-3 mins the card just ignores the setting and does this fluctuating thing.

I have tried afterburner which gives the same results as CCC settings.

Has anyone seen/heard this or am I looking at DSR for this card?

The card performs great and really please with FPS etc, just the fan is not right I am sure.

Thanks

That's a shame particularly as it seems that you have a nice 'clocker' with good temps too.

If it fluctuates when set manually I suspect a fault unfortunately.

That sounds a bit off to me. If setting a custom fan profile in AB doesn't fix it then I'm out of suggestions. DSR/RMA I guess.

Thanks for your thoughts guys. MSI got back to me and said I should return it or submit it for warranty repair. Someone on the msi forums got a more specific reply in that "diode d201 can be removed to fix the issue". I guess this is what would happen if I returned it for a warranty repair.

Anyone have any idea what that is all about?

As such I have DSR'd it and will wait for a refund from seller.

Shame as I really liked the card. Do i have to wait for the dsr process to be completed before i order a new one? can a dsr be questioned if you place a new order for the same card straight away? I did find the msi card loud when the fans went over 50%, but if I get another good one like the last card then it shouldn't go over 50% at all. Are all the makes as loud as this, or are the gigabyte ones on offer here now any quieter?

I had this problem also. I RMA'd the card to OCUK and got a new one which is doing exactly the same thing. Don't fancy removing some diode and voiding my warranty to fix a manufacturing problem though.

Yup ... looks like latest msi 7950 twin frozr Boost fan control is borked - you can have it anyway you like as long as its on at full speed once it hits 61c!

I have the Boost card, haven't messed with fan control yet. So now not only do I buy the wrong card without a 7970 PCB, it has a totally borked fan. Great.

I asked about water blocks for my Boost cards in the cutomer service forum and was told that there is one and that the EK configurator would tell me which one so the guys in OCUk think you can get a block for it although there is doubt about that on here! I have opened my 3 (intending to go on water!) and can get 2 running on my board but if I can't get a block I am not happy as I need WC to run 3 of these things, running on air simply wont cut it at all.

Yeah exactly the same card. Gonna ask them to replace it with a Gigabyte as I've already now spent £20 getting these faulty cards shipped back. Never owned an MSI product before, and after this experience, I never will.

Any updates with this? What sort of RPM does it jump to? Got mine yesterday - at first it was up to around 2400RPM, however on the same temps its now around 3400RPM - does this sound like the issue above?

To be honest, I don't seem to have any problems with my MSI.

Anyone know what sort of percentage is affected? I was thinking of buying a second, but am now hearing they may have two different types of pcb.

I think mine is affected, set the fan earlier to a fixed RPM of 2600, came back later to find its up to around 3300 again, and this is one of these "fixed" ones.

Kind of annoying, but doens't bother me that much so I'll just ignore it.
