Msi 7970 Oc bad overclocker

Who said that's the average? Also, a card which can only achieve a poor overclock at stock can sometimes achieve a good overclock with some voltage tweaking. If you can hit 1100 on the core at stock, you got lucky IMO.

Do a bench at stock vs. 1100 on core and you will see the difference in frame rates.

It's what I figured as being average, reading forums etc.. ;)

I suppose it won't hurt running at 1100mhz, if I can keep it stable lol.

Temps aren't a issue now Matt, not since i adjusted the fan profile.

Pushing 1200/1550 brought on the following results..

@ 1.2v = device crash in heaven
@ 1.230 = artifacts everywhere in heaven, from launch
@ 1.25v = same artifacts, from launch

I dare go any higher with the volts. I wouldn't even let Heaven run as soon as I saw the artifacts. Just to be clear, reverting the clocks back to default. the artifacts disappear.

I'm resetting the pc each time i run heaven and have the power to +20.

I guess 1200mhz on the core is out of the question. Down I go..

Lower your Memory to 1400Mhz for a while, some take a bit of use before the memory IC's settle in, i know mine did, it would not do more than 1350 from new, there are others on the net who experienced the same thing.

I reduced the clock to 1125mhz, reset the memory to 1375, and heaven still crashes. I've tested 3 times. Crashes at the same place each time. 25th stage into heaven, lighthouse appears.. Black screen.

Testing 1100mhz, 1375 mem, stock volts..

Thats one of the places mine crashes with an unstable overclock, a voltage bump usually fixes it, have you got more juice in the voltage tank?

Voltage is at stock.

Ok at 1100/1550/stock voltage (1175) heaven is stable :D ..

Where do i go from here? lol

Must head to work, will keep this thread updated as to where i go with this card or as to where the card will go. Time will tell. For now, thanks to everybody for their help.

Thats not bad for stock volts :)

If you ever plan on pushing it more let us know as you will need to start overvolting.

Yep. Pretty good for stock. Maybe if you put in a gaming sesh and then go back to messing with memory/voltage it will go a bit smoother. Bed in the card a bit.

I'm taking delivery of my MSI OC tomorrow so I'll report in here with my OC results.

1100 on stock voltage is good so dont complain about that. I'm sure with some tweaking we'll be able to get you to 1200 core.

Patience and persistence are key.

Thought I would add my 2p's worth with regard to this specific card and my experiences of overclocking it.

First off you must follow the correct procedure to unlock the card and it's voltages - follow the thread by another member (it's very useful) http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18431335 I was getting all sorts of issues until I did this.

This card will overclock quite nicely. I have managed a stable set-up with the following:

Core Voltage= 1.3v
Power Limit= +20%
Core Clock=1200
Memory Clock=1600
Balanced Fan Speed profile used

Max temp seen is 71degs under full loading.

Personally I don't think "Heaven" is a definitive stress tester. I had no issues in "Heaven" but would get issues in proper gaming, so don't take "Heaven" as gospel. Anyway, these settings and results are under loading on games like BF3 with no stability issues.

My ASIC quality is 66.1% so not that great.

Hope this information is of help.

Thanks for the feedback.

This is a good card, even though its a reference.

I've recommended it to several people and all have been happy with it.

That was my guide as well, so thanks for the kind words. :)

As LtMatt mentioned before temps really effect these cards. I could get my 7970 to 1200/1650 but I had to keep the core under 63 degrees to do so which meant the fan running at over 50 percent.
With the new drivers you won't notice those 25/25s on the core and memory.

Patience and persistence are key.

This is the best advice in the thread.

I thought mine was duff until I rolled my sleeves up and took my time, it's not as simple as pushing the sliders and crossing your fingers.

Now I can get 1200/1800+ with voltage on both the core and the memory for BM's, what I thought was a below average clocker turned out to be great for the money-£300 for=680 performance before the performance drivers came out, win win.

For general gaming 1100/1600 is plenty.

Going higher than 1100/1550/1.185 (1.175v stock voltage) my card starts to become unstable. If I higher the voltage, up until 1.21v i can hit 1125mhz on the core, bumping up the voltage higher than 1.21v seems to make no difference. When unstable i see black squares appearing, tiny little ones in clusters,. Temps are controlled and stay under 65c. I'm happy with 1100/1550 tbh. But would have been nice to get it higher. I followed matt's advice and i'm now using his official overclocking method within Afterburner, instead of Trixx. I did try moving up slowly in 10mhz intervals to no avail. I can't help thinking if it's me or the card going wrong. Lol.

1100/1550 is still a decent overclock. Doubt you'd notice any real-world difference at 1600/1700 or above. My max overclock so far is 1160/1600 at 1.2mV.

Moving away from its comfort zone of 1550, Seems like it can run the memory at 1600. No difference to the score in heaven though.

No, the vRAM makes almost no difference in Heaven or 3DMark11 full stop.

But it does in games, see here http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18437182

That seems to be pretty consistent with all of my games.

I really like mine. Dual bios, voltage unlocked, good warranty, and they tend to be good clockers.

Mine can do 1175/1725 at stock volts (1.74v) and others can do even more. I think LtMatt has one that can do 1200+/1800+.
