The new NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980/970 is powered by the next generation NVIDIA Maxwell Architecture, giving you incredible performance, unmatched power efficiency, and cutting-edge features.

Maxwell is the most advanced GPU architecture ever made, designed to be the engine of next generation gaming. Inspired by light, it was designed to solve some of the most complex lighting and graphics challenges in visual computing. For the first time, gaming GPU's can dynamically render indirect light using the new VXGI (Voxel Global Illumination technology). Scenes are significantly more lifelike as light interacts more realistically in the game environment.

The GTX 980 is the worlds fastest GPU and the GTX 970 offers the most advanced performance in its class. Each delivers 2x the performance of previous-generation card, bringing new gaming experiences to virtual reality, and ultra resolution 4k displays.

Enable the detail of 4k monitors, on a 1080P display. DSR produces smoother images by rendering a game at a high resolution, then downscaling it to the native resolution of the display using advanced filtering.

GeForce GTX 980 and 970 cards support tear-free, super-fast NVIDIA G-Sync monitor display technology including 4k. Together, these technologies provide the most immersive and competitive gaming experiences possible.

This card is superb, with many seeing overclocks of 1600MHz+ core and over 8000MHz memory. Not only that even at 100% fan speed this card is quiet, such a great achievement by MSI and NVIDIA. :)

I'm looking at upgrading my 670 to something in the 780 region. However the only thing I use is Flight Simulator X. Not sure at this early stage if I would benefit from a 780 or 970?

970 for sure, performs better, much quieter, much cooler, and needs less power than a 780

Surely not? If so, would I need one or two 970 to game at 4K?
Your advice please sir.

Mark

Yeah its true I replaced my MSI 780 with a MSI 970 and a stock 970 is faster than my manually overclocked 780 was and a bit more.
I've been playing about with it and I am sure there is much more I can push the 970 but I want to sort out my i5 4670k overclock first.
Its currently on 1503mhz / 8000mhz on stock voltage.
Thats the max I can do anymore and the driver crashes. Next would be to add the mvee's. Just like Gibbo said last Friday.

Damn you Nvidia finally tempted me into parting with my dosh after best part of 2½ years of wanting to buy a card.

The 8800 GTS 512 had to go was eagerly awaiting the 600 series but I was disappointed and like some saw it as a bit of a 'hothatch' card overclocked/overpriced to compete with the 7950/7970.

Come the summer of 2012 I went on the bay (yeah I know) for a 460 (were overpriced IMO) and ended up with a 470 lol but it's served me well.

Thought I might be forking out for a new monitor too, just fixed (for the 4th time) my old faithful 24" DGM VA. Hope I can get another year out of it as things finally seem to be moving in the monitor market g/freesync etc.

970Sli or 980 for 4K down the line

Don't know what to do now - I was considering replacing my 780 with a 970, but Gibbo suggested two would be better for planned 4K later down the line. Would one 980 cut it? Or would I be best going for 2 970's?

In either case I would rather buy Nvidia, and what is the situation regarding blocks for either card, as they will be going under water?

Sorry for all the questions - but funds are limited, so would like to make an informed choice or decision.

Mark

I heart this card

I've never ever considered SLI as I dislike the extra heat/noise, always wanted 1 decent quiet card, but I can see me picking another one of these up in the future when 1 starts to struggle at 1200p
