My main game is Archeage, getting crashes 4-5 times a day. I've had it in Battlefield 4 too. It happens mostly when alt+tabbing.

After it crashes or sometimes when I alt+tab, all my opened windows (Windows Explorer, Teamspeak, Chrome) are either black or have black boxes on them and I have to alt-tab between them a few times or hover over the boxes to get rid of them.

Rest of system is as follows:
CPU: 4670k @ 4.5
Mobo: Gigabyte Z87X-UD3H
RAM: Gskill Ripjaws 16gb
GPU: MSI 970 (Driver: 347.52)
Storage: Revodrive x2, OCZ agility 3, 1gb Seagate
OS Windows 8.1
PSU: OCZ ZS 550w

Just to add: I play in 1080p.

I'd try re-installing current drivers, if the problem persists, do a fresh installation of a different set of drivers and test again. A few months back I had constant crashes in BF4 and War Thunder. Couldn't think what was happening so I reset my CMOS and overclocked my CPU from scratch again only to find out that it was the GPU driver.....

It was my first bad driver I've used with Nvidia, AMD it happened one time also years back so it's not something that happens regularly.

Tried multiple drivers, all the way back to the 970 launch driver.

Looks like a driver issue. Re-install windows.

Already done this unfortunately.

Windows Event Viewer => Critical Errors

That will give you the error code. Google that code (or post it here). That should at least confirm whether its a power issue or a driver/gpu hardware issue.

Looks like Windows didn't log the error event. The only thing I have is the crashdump.

Code:

Actually never noticed this before, looks like it's hitting the 970 limit.

Code:
16:32:49> Virtual Memory Usage: 3472Mb

Afterburner never reports it hitting above 2gb, looks like some sort of memory leak in the game.

To me, with the system you have it looks like it may be too much for the PSU to cope with.

I could be wrong! But it looks like you are right on the edge of total system power consumption with a good 550W when under heavy load considering that you have an Overclock + 3 PCI SSD's, a HDD and a GTX970.

I think you need at least a very good 600W PSU.

:)

I didn't think there was a limit of 3.5GB vram usage, just thought it started to stutter a bit as it started to access that extra 0.5GB.

Hmm have you thought about an RMA and a new R9 290 instead?

:)

I think the stuttering is what's causing the crash. Cryengine might have issues writing data to the slower memory.

Then I will need a new PSU :P Might just have to tone down the settings.
