MSI AB shows incorrect clocks

hi guys

i got a query
got an old twin Xeon system with a 550Ti in it, just having a mess around with..

MSI Afterburner shows incorrect clock figures..

Stock clocks for this card are CORE 1000mhz, MEMORY 1125mhz
show correctly under GPU-Z

Afterburner is showing 1000 Core, 2300 memory..

You'd think, well, just go by what GPU says.. But i cant..
even with the card at stock speed, any load from either GPU tester, or a game.. it artifacts and crashes immediately, as if its actually running at 2300mhz.. Which is completely OTT for stability.

So basicaly, acts as if its running at 2300mhz, wont run anything for even 5 seconds..
But GPU-Z states it as stock clocks..

and no, no overclock.. The BIOS of this card doesnt allow OC

If i turn the Afterburner memory bar down to 1125mhz where the card should be.. GPU-Z and other programs show the clocks as 335mhz memory clock, and runs a game like JUNK!!!

I actually do not know what manufacture the card is!
No labels, anywhere, and never seen this one before..
But its a 550Ti..
I wanted to flash it to another manufactures BIOS, but this card is the only one with a 70.26.20.00.02 Device Bios..
All of 550Ti's BIOS files i see are slightly different. So didnt that would work

i cant see how different hardware will make Afterburner show correct clock figures..
But worth a shot..

Just noticed you've tried GPU-Z too, with different clock results :confused:

This sounds like a dying GPU to me..

yeah mate.. GPU-Z shows correct clocks..
Afterburner doesnt...
It shows correct core clocks, but incorrect memory clocks

cards memory clock is 1125, but afterburner shows it at 2300mhz..
and leaving everything stock, a game artifacts a bit while playing, and normally lose screen picture and system lockup within 2mins..
So thinking its actually 2300mhz!

but when i down clock to put it to correct 1125mhz, GPU-Z then shows it to be 335mhz clock...

The GPU runs fine when its not playing games..
I can watch blu-rays fine, 1080 60fps youtube vids etc..
just cant play a game..

I just installed windows 10 dual boot with windows 7, and downloaded afterburner and GPUZ which are both used on Windows 7 with no problem..
Installed on Windows 10, both Afterburner and GPUZ "sensors" readings show a core of 950, whilst GPUZ "info" says correctly the core is 1178?
I have a KFa2 GTX 970 Infinity 8 black which appears to be working OK, no overclock other than factory set. It clearly is not the GPU, as it works OK in both OS, and Windows 7 gives all readings OK. Are you on Windows 10 by any chance? maybe incompatibility.

Just thought, I am using the drivers installed with the new Windows 10, (353.82)so I will install the latest Nvidia.
Nvidia control panel shows also 1178 core, something weird

Edit: I installed the latest drivers, and noted a few spikes in the process on the sensor readings which gave a correct basic 1178 core.
Running Firestrike bench all was well.
I did not realise that the core went down to 950 on idle, as on Windows 7 the lowest recorded clock was 1178, so it seems, Windows 10 was a new install, and running at idle allows the clock to go lower than on Windows 7, (5 plus years since installed Windows 7, so a lot happening I suppose).
