The original version not the lightning. Both are discontinued for some reason.

Driver Version: 7.14.10.0860, Catalyst 11.9

Graphics Card Temp: 52 Degrees with following settings in MSI Afterburner.

Core Voltage (Mv) : 1149
Core Clock (Mhz) : 950
Memory Clock: 1450
Fan speed: 54

Goes down to 49 Degrees if I keep the window open.

I was wondering are these good temps?

I also sometimes get artifacts in games like Fifa, but not in others like Metro 2033, however all of my games ( except for if I do a full system restart and then only open that game ) keep minimizing every 2-3 minutes. I have turned off desktop composition, use the Microsoft Basic theme that doesn't use aero, turn firefox off before opening the game but still get this result. Is this because the graphics card is too hot? Is there something wrong with the graphics card? Is it other components?

Rest of spec:

AMD Phenom II X6 1100T 3.6 @ OC Air stable
8GB Corsair XMS3
Zalman Z9 Plus Gaming Tower
AMD A99X Evo Mobo
Crappy DVD R/W
30GB OCZ Vertex SSD ( OS )
1TB Samsung Spinpoint HDD ( Games + steam / origin are installed here )
ASUS ML239 Monitor.

Forgot to mention these are not in game temps, this is just while general web browsing.

Those temps do seem a little high for general web browsing.

What does MSI Afterburner tell you was the maximum temp reached while gaming? If you leave it running minimised in the background then it will log the temps and tells you the highest it reached.

The minimising every 2-3 mins could be driver related? Do you get a black screen followed by the minimising? It could be your graphics driver crashing and then recovering.

You could check in windows event viewer to see if there are eny error reports logged which mention ATI or Catalyst Control Centre.

Control Panel=> Admin tools => Event Viewer

What power supply are you using with the system? It could be unstable due to insufficient power to the card.

I am using an Antec TruePower New Modular 650W '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply.

It goes to a black screen for like a second then to The desktop yes.

Will open Metro 2033 - Results are in 65-70 Degrees Celsius keeps crashing about every 60 seconds now, just goes straight to desktop.

Getting offered to switch to Windows 7 Basic Theme, I thought I had that applied already? Wish I got an Nvidia alternative right now.

Problem seems to be related to desktop window manager.

How long have you had this card and what card were you using before?

The black screen => minimise to desktop sounds like the driver crashing and then recovering. There should be mention of this in system event logs. Look for mentions of ATI, CCC or Video Driver in the event viewer.

I used to get this in Metro with the release drivers for my 6970. A complete removal/reinstall of latest drivers solved this problem.

Assuming yor temps dont come back crazy high while gaming I would reccomend completely removing the current drivers and reinstalling the latest catalyst drivers from AMD's site to see if that fixes the problem.

You could also use Driver Sweeper to remove any residual driver components from old drivers before installing the latest ones.

If it is crashing after 60 seconds then I doubt temps are the problem. That is not enough time for the card to properly heat up

Edit: Just looked again at your original post. Those are not the stock clocks/voltages your card came with I assume?

Set everything back to default in Afterburner and see if the problem persists.

Off the top of my head the stock voltage for the 6970 is 1.175v. You are trying to run your card clocked to the limits of Afterburner while undervolting it.... That could well explain why it is crashing.

Should be:

Core Voltage => 1.175v
Core Clock => 880Mhz
Memory Clock => 1375Mhz

I haven't been using this card for long but I have had the problems ever since I isntalled it.

Could you give me step by step instructions?

Would it be: Uninstall driver via Driver Sweeper > reboot > install new driver?

Also found these error codes:

and many more along those lines.

See above post regarding overclocking.

Restore the default clocks and see if your games are still crashing.

Do you have anything else you can test with apart from Metro such as 3D Mark 11 or furmark?

Games wise I have:

Metro 2033
Fifa 12
Cod:4
CSS
BF: BC2
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Grand theft auto: Vice City

I can however install any needed software where appropriate.

Restored to the normal settings and temps down to 44 Degrees C with general browsing!

Still have this problem, have installed furmark and finding 3D Mark 11 download now.

If you are still experiencing problems then you could try a re-install of the drivers.

I usually;
1) Uninstall the current ones using windows control panel.

2) Reboot in safe mode. (Hold F8 duringstartup to access the windows boot menu and select Safe mode)

3) Run driver sweeper to remove any old driver related files. ATI and Nvidia. http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/

4) Reboot and install latest ATI drivers from AMD site.

See if that helps solve your problems.

Also are you 100% sure your CPU OC is stable?

Everything reverted to stock, drivers driver sweeped then re-installed. Everything working fine now, thanks for the help everyone.

Then there's a conflict of software somewhere, or hardware being unstable!

Never had this problem with Nvidia cards and I put stupendous clocks on those cards

It's always easier to blame Amd rather than find the root of the cause, it's the thing to do isn't it?

Look through the forums, there's plenty trouble with Nvidia cards too!

It can be said the other way as well:

'Never had this problem with Amd cards and I put stupendous clocks on those cards' :p:

Both of mine can do 1Ghz+ in CrossFire
I'm not having a go, I couldn't get Brink or Rage to work because it was worse than a slide show, it could take 5-20 seconds for each frame!

My first thoughts were like yours, blame AMD. General reading about in general 'it's Amd's fault'.

Got a 2500K last week and new OS install, Rage now works, I don't know about Brink because I only tried it with the free weekend on steam.

If it was rubbish drivers then it still wouldn't work as I used the same drivers with the new install.

There was loads of programs installed/uninstalled before with my last system but I tried Rage before I put a ton of other stuff back in and it's totally fine.

In a nutshell, it's always easier to say it's the fault of the driver when it may be something else.
