Wondering if the time is right for an upgrade on my B550 - it presently has a Ryzen 3700x and I spotted the mobo will support a 5900x with a BIOS update so was thinking about upgrading.

Current config also includes 2 x 16GB 3200MHZ Corsair Vengeance DDR4 DIMMs (CMW32GX4M2Z3200C16), an AData PCIe3x4 SSD.

Am I right in my reading of the compatibility charts that the B550 board will only support 2 x DIMMs alongside a 5900x, so adding a further 2 x 16 GB DIMMs will not be of any value? Or is anyone running 4 x DIMMs on one of these boards?

And realistically, what speed difference am I likely to see going from the present SSD to a PICe4, say a WD SN850 or similar?

I’ve got the same board, but only with a 5700X. I’ve got 4 DIMMs in it, though only 4x8GB currently.

I have another 2x32GB sticks in a PC at my parents’ house that I need to nab when I next get the chance to get over there so I’m going to give 48GB a go next week sometime.

Should really look at the compatibility lists myself :)

I believe the official spec for Zen 3 is (taken from AMD's spec for the 5700X):

Max Memory Speed
2x1R DDR4-3200
2x2R DDR4-3200
4x1R DDR4-2933
4x2R DDR4-2667

I'm pretty sure you'll do better than that, but it is the baseline. I should imagine many (most?) 16GB sticks are single rank by now.

You're right about the QVL, 4 DIMMs of that particular memory were either not tested, or didn't work, but I think there were other 3000/3200 sticks in the QVL with 4, so it doesn't mean the board has a problem.

I have a MSI B550m mortar wifi with a 5900X and 32GB RAM. That is 4 x 8GB of Corsair 3200 RGB, not sure exactly which. Rock solid, brilliant set-up. Only thing I came across, and is peculiar to this board I think is that the RAM runs strictly at XMP profile settings. Any attempt to set it manually results in a no-boot. That is OK for me, stock 3200 RAM settings are fine.

THat's reassuring... I guess you needed to update the BKIOS for the CPU support?

Would be interested to see how you get on with that switch of memory... Screenshot of the compatibility checker here for my DIMMs, which I read as only 2 DIMM supported, so interested that you're getting all 4 working.

Yep I needed a BIOS update. Got the board from a mate for cheap with the 4x8GB sticks in it and the BIOS was ancient so I updated it with the USB stick and push button method and it worked fine after.

I’ll be picking up my 2x16GB sticks later today. My 16GB sticks are exactly the same as yours by the way, and the 8GB sticks I have here now are the same type too. Won’t get a chance to put the 48GB in until Wednesday or Thursday but I’ll update you when I do.

Got back from my trip away a day earlier than expected so I’ve put the RAM in. I can confirm 48GB of Corsair Vengeance 3200MHz with 2x16GB and 2x8GB sticks works fine :)
