Wondering if there is anyone here with an MSI B850 Gaming Plus WIFI motherboard? or perhaps any MSI B850 motherboard? who may be able to help with a few questions I have,

First question:
If you are in the bios and you press the escape key, a pop up box appears and says 'discard changes and exit' if I press OK - the screen goes blank for about 10 seconds and then comes back on but I'm still in the bios - does this happen for you? (I was expecting it to exit the bios and the pc restart)

Second question:
After updating the bios to the latest version, when I try to install Windows 10 using a USB flash, for about 20 seconds before the Windows setup screen appears, I see a funny pattern on my screen.

I think there is supposed to be a little loading indicator on the screen at around this time.

After 20 seconds the setup screen loads and is fine

I'm using on board graphics and a DP to DVI cable but this wasn't happening when I installed Windows 10 with the original bios.

This only appears when installing Windows, after that it's fine, should I be worried? or try running the bios update again?

Third question: temperatures
I have an AMD Ryzen 5 7600 CPU and the stock cooler and am wondering what the temps should be,

Saturday's weather was super hot - after about 20 minutes of the PC being switched on:
System temp: 44c - CPU temp: 74c

Today's weather is not so hot - after 10 minutes of the PC being switched on and only in the bios:
System temp: 37c - CPU temp: 66c

Does 66c sound too hot for the CPU temp from just being idle in the bios for 10 minutes?

Hot hot hot.
The stock wraith stealth is crap and should really be viewed only as a stop-gap.
There are some excellent £15-20 aftermarket coolers around so no excuse not to get one :P

Are any of those downdraft? or the tower type?

The BIOS is not always a good place to test the CPU temps, I'd run hwinfo alongside normal usage in Windows.

I will try that and see what results I get, I was expecting late 40's like my old pc,

Thank you both for your help by the way!

These modern CPUs run more like GPUs of old, hot running is normal on air cooling, though admittedly the stealth is a poor example.

Stock coolers are really intended just to prevent the CPU from throttling under typical usage (bit of gaming, browsing, etc), but even with top notch air cooling they run relatively hot due to the aggressive boost behaviour.

tower type are usually cheaper. downdraft coolers are usually for smaller builds and hence, suffer from the SFF tax (they also don't have sales volume, so cost per unit to manufacture is higher too)

this is £11: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/kolink-umbra-ex180-white-edition-cpu-cooler-120mm-coo-klk-01161.html
incredible value

That's a nice looking cooler, I'm assuming I would be able to add another fan on to the other side of it too? (not sure if that would actually make much difference)

That makes sense, When I was fitting it I did think that it looked a bit smaller than I was expecting,

I installed hwinfo, when I run the program it opens ok but a few seconds after I move the mouse over anything on the screen (without clicking anything) the computer crashes, (mouse won't move, keyboard not working to do ctrl+alt+delete) in the end I have to switch it off and back on, I tried a couple of times but doesn't make any difference,

RE the hwinfo, it seems that the 'installer' version crashes the PC, the 'portable' version is OK.

Both hwinfo and aida64 say the CPU is at 48c - the bios still says 70c, that's a big difference, if I was to install a game or something and the hwinfo temp rose to say 58c, will the bios fool itself into thinking the CPU is too hot and shut down the pc ?

No, the BIOS is usually hotter because the CPU is actually uhm, hotter. I'd guess one reason why is because the power management features are not fully enabled until it boots into Windows.

Thanks to you both again!

I watched a couple of things on iPlayer last night and done some web browsing, everything seems to be working so far,

Really impressed with the built in Wi-Fi, when I made a windows 11 usb stick last night it was done in 15 minutes which seemed crazy considering it's over 8gb.

Do you think its safe to ignore the funny patterns on the screen that appeared when trying to install win 10? (i don't see it when installing windows 11)

I think the other thing I mentioned about the escape button saying discard and exit - and not actually exiting is probably a translation error, there seems to be a lot of confusing translations with MSi, I've bought stuff from Temu with better English instructions
