Just bought the 3600x CPU.
MSI B350 Gaming Plus motherboard
Flashed the latest bios.
Windows wont boot, just tries to repair,
I changed nothing in the bios, not sure if I need to, when I refit my 1600, no problems, goes straight in.
Seems like lots of people are having this problem with various MSI boards, some with B450s as well, any fixes please, I've tried quite a few on the MSI forum, but non have worked,

Exactly what version of Windows are you using? Hopefully it's Windows 10. Your problem sounds slightly different from most that I've read as you can actually start the boot process but it is going to repair. Have you tried installing the latest chipset drivers while the 1600 is in then retrying with the 3600X?

It might be the unfortunate case of waiting for MSI to see if they can get to bottom of this and fix it with a bios update.

Windows 10 pro , and yes I thought about a fresh install via a usb , I get a bit confused though regarding stuff like product keys, I will look at my options on that one

Normally, the Windows 10 product key is tied to the motherboard. So if you're keeping the same motherboard and all the other components the same, hopefully it'd just reactivate automatically once you reconnect to internet.

If you do have a spare SSD/HDD lying around, you could just do a test install on the spare drive offline (not connected to internet) just to check that it solves your above problem. Then if that's fine, do the Windows 10 reinstallation on your usual SSD (after backing up all you important data).

Yep that's exactly what I'd do. I always have a spare 256Gb SSD lying around for such purposes, though even an HDD will do the job but just take a fair bit longer.

Thanks for the advice, doing a fresh install of windows , might get an SSD for spare as theyre so cheap,
will update later as im still running with the 1600 installed for now

Well I fitted the 3600x and installed windows off the usb, working fine now, activation key must be with the motherboard as advised,
So happy ending for me today, now to sell on the 1600

Glad you got it sorted. Ah the joys of fresh install - and the misery for the time taken to configure everything the way you like it. ;)
