I have an MSI 1080ti and in the box it mentions registering, but when you go online to the link specified it says the warranty benefits aren't for GPUs or motherboards. Do you need to do anything to register, or is it automatic with the serial number?

Thanks for the link. On that page, click 'More' (next to warranty registration), and that's where it says it's not needed for GPU and motherboard. That's what I'd like to double-check as it seems strange.
You only have to register if you want to go through MSI directly for an rma. You can just do it when you need to though, you don't have to register to activate the standard warranty. Warranty registration on that page is just a current promotion to give you an extra 3 months on top of the standard warranty for certain products.
IIRC when going through msi, warranty is based on purchase date or serial number if you can't provide proof of purchase.
