I've either bought a duffer or this thing just isn't up to my expectations. So i'll list my issues and you can all tell me if i'm going mad or this thing is just crap.

1. The cpu fan runs constantly at 2500 rpm at idle regardless of the power mode.

2 Battery life is appaling , just browsing the net from 100% charge i'm down to 86% in about 15 mins, this is with 50% screen brighness and only wireless active, battery saver plan.

3. The screen is dire, playing games whilst plugged in there is a significant amount of image blur (Ghosting) , running without vsync helps a little but then the tearing is awful.

Overall i'm a little disappointed.

So any advice would be appreciated.

Sorry, I dont have one but im researching a new laptop at the moment. This is dreadful to hear as I was already worried about MSI and Gigabyte laptops from what ive seen on youtube.

Im not trying to be cheeky but im something similar to what you are describing here, my expectations of how good something should be seems to be above what others deem acceptable.

Probably others will no doubt tell you that the battery will be terrible on a gaming laptop and while I agree with that you dont be playing games on it all the time. So when your not the battery should be decent.

Im sure the CPU fan could be sorted out but why isnt it already doing it itself?

I wonder if you would be kind enough to tell me what you think of the build quality of it?

Well , i'm not a newcomer to gaming laptops , however my previous laptops have always been Dells and aside from the poor quality screen on my L702x (my own fault really) the build quality has always been superb.

Anyway i'll give you a mini review.

Screen, I opted for the 1080p as i dont see the point in a Uhd or 4k screen without the Gpu to drive it. First impression of the screen were good , it had ok contrast and ok brightness but during gaming i had to always play with the gamma (if avaliable) especially games like Alien isolation and Elite dangerous. Also there was a significant amount of motion blur which in the end was the deal breaker for me.

Chassis. First impressions are a sleek lightweight chassis, the upper covers of the base and lid are anodised brushed alloy which looks nice and feels cool to the touch. The base is just the usual hard plastic, its just the bezel that lets it down, its a nasty flimsy plastic that looks distorted where its clipped to the lid.

Cooling. This was the one bit i really liked, the Gpu and Cpu are cooled by separate fants and heatsinks to the rear left and right of the base. The fans intake from the sides and exhaust to the rear. The only negative is that by design the cpu fan spins at 2800rpm all the time regardless of cpu state or battery mode.

Touchpad. I dont know what it is about modern laptops and elan touchpads, i dont think i have a good thing to say about the touchpad , no wait , it looks nice, other than that its a quirky , awkward piece of crap, the plus side is you can turn it off !

Battery life. I have a strong suspicion that my battery was duff from the factory, HWmonitor showed the wear level at 10% when new and at 12% after 2 days little use. I think i managed about 1 hour between charges just basic browsing on battery saver plan , screen at 50%. Verdict: Dire. Also note that the battery is internal which is another huge negative in my book.

Overall performance : Well its ok, not great. I guess this is an expectation thing. Compared to my last dell it felt laggy, even with a fresh Windows install, gaming wise it will play most games at high to max settings but to maintain 60fps you can forget about AA and any post processing effects such as Gameworks features and Physx.

Internals. Even as msi say you can break the warranty seal to replace the Hdd or upgrade the memory the only this you can really replace is the included 1tb 2.5 sata drive, the 2 M.2 ssd slots and ram slots are on the top of the motherboard and getting to them is not for the faint hearted, for anyone who isnt skilled in laptop repair the likleyhood is that you will end up damaging one of the dozens of ribbon cables and connectors that need to be removed. it really is nasty to work on.

Overall verdict: This had been a disappointing lesson, i have found out that the GS60 Ghost pro isnt a slim portable gaming latop, its just a slim portable desktop replacement and the only place its usable is on a desk, you can't sit on the sofa and browse the web without it being plugged in, the build quality is mediocre and performance isn't what i expected. The screen and battery are by far the worst aspects of this laptop.

My search continues, i think a Clevo chassied latop is probably the way forwards.

Thats a really informative review, thanks. That is sad to hear for a laptop with that kinda price tag. I love MSI and I always use their stuff in my PC's, them or Asus, but I think thats me off these laptops once and for all.

Gigabyte are okay but I would not really buy their stuff so much as it would be down my list of manufacturers a bit which is why im not keen on theirs to start with.

The Asus ROG ones are so silly looking I find it hard even to look at them. They are one of the few gaming laptops that ive actually seen myself. Plus they seem to have awful audio which is one of those basic cardinal sins.

Anyway, I have narrowed my search down to two laptops, both of which also commit cardinal sins but they seem to tick more boxes than the others for me.

1. HP Omen: Seems very sound all round apart from the GTX860, the (why oh why oh why do you make life hell for us you stupid companies) "Beats Audio" and then there is only 1 ssd. (A new Omen, fixing two of these problems, is about but you cant seem to get one anywhere).

2. The Razer Blade. The Queen couldn't import one of these so I have no chance I fear. It may be the best pick but they are too hard to get so I gave up.

I know you are wanting people with the same laptop as you to give you their thoughts and Im sorry for blabbing on, but I can relate to your experience here. The one single review of your laptop on OCUK is glowing, and as such if you want something that single opinion could push you over the edge to get it. Ive lost count of the times when a product had 1, or 5, or 20 glowing reviews and it turns out to be total rubbish.

Will you be able to return it? Im not sure what the policy is there. And have you looked at the Omen or Blade? I know the Omen is not a real powerhouse though so most may not want it.

Hi Darket

What is the model number you have bought ?

In regards to the battery life, have you tried the Shift function (FN + F7)

Have you double checked your dGPU is not being activated in 2d mode?

Hey Loki, it was the GS60 2QE Ghost Pro (1080P) i7 4720HQ , GTX970M.

The Shift function only activates when plugged into the mains, its disabled when running on battery.

I also updated the EC firmware and bios, did the battery calibration.
