MSI GS63VR 7RF rattling fan

Hi guys,

I bought this laptop about half a year ago, and now one of the GPU fans (there are two) starts rattling as soon as the video card is in use.

I've contacted the MSI support team and they responded to all my emails and things very quickly. But in the automated email they sent to me after requesting a collection of my laptop, it says that it normally takes about 2-3 weeks to get it fixed and send it back to me. Based on what I've seen on this forum it might actually take longer. However, that is my only computer and I literally cannot live without it for anything above a week.

So any suggestion on how to tackle this issue within a week? I've heard that MENDIT is the authorised service centre for many brands including MSI, but in another post it took them 6 weeks to send back a laptop.

Thanks

It seems to be a bit of a common fault throughout the MSI range where the GPU or even the CPU fan will rattle, I remember reading online a while ago that a fan firmware is supposed to cure it but in fact only makes it slightly less loud.

If I'm not mistaken and if memory serves right, the only way to fix it is to replace the fan with a newer one - and should only take half an hour to do if you're confident enough & can source the right fan.

Thank you for your reply. I only updated the BIOS and EC firmware and it did nothing. Was thinking about replacing the fan myself, but since the GS series is not known for easy disassembly, I don't really want to risk causing any further damage to it by fixing it myself unless I have to. Btw, do you have any idea where to get the 'right fan'?

No worries.

Yeah apparently the culprit to the issue is the bearings itself in the fan which partially seize up due to being poorly manufactured - I think MSI revised the fans in later GS models.

You're right about these GS models - even though you've got access to the inside of the laptop & hard drive by removing the lower panel screws / panel, everything like the SSD / RAM & fans are secured to the motherboard facing upwards towards the keyboard and the whole motherboard will require disassembly to get to it all. I had to do exactly this when I did a CPU repaste on my old GS70 a few years ago & took a good hour or so the first time around.

If you want to keep your warranty intact, the only thing I would recommend is to bite the bullet and get MSI to undertake the process, or one of their approved third party repairers. If you do want to carry it out yourself by sourcing the correct replacement fan - try and search eBay for one, or another MSI part supplier online.

Thank you for all the information. I actually just cancelled a collection request to get it fixed by MSI after confirming the amount of time it takes. Will still reconsider it with your recommendation.
