MSI GTX 1080TI FE - Is 80c too high?

Hi guys, I received my msi gtx1080ti founders edition this morning. As you'd expect I was super exited to get it installed and try the beast out. What a beast it is, great performance, hitting around 120fps with everything maxed out at 1440p however the temps seem a little concerning at least to me.

My old Zotac gtx970 had two fans so it was pretty quiet and efficient at cooling. This is my first time owning a founders card or reference design if you prefer and using a gpu with a blower.

The temps when Idle for the 1080ti are around 33-36c and as soon as I start a game up it goes to 82c and pretty much stays around those temps. Also noisy than expected.

Is it normal to be at that temp or should it be lower? I'll list other specs of my rig for reference:

Fractal r5 case
intel i76700k at stock
x2 be quiet silent wings 3 (140mm) high speed fans (one in the front, one in the back)
be quiet dark power pro 750w psu
16gb ddr4 ram
akasa venom voodoo cpu cooler

As great as the card is performance wise I feel a little let down by the noise and high temps. Kinda thinking I should have waited to get aftermarket version like the evga ftw edition. I could return it but I'm conflicted on whether to put up with the noise and temps or send it back and wait for the other versions to come out.

no 83c is thermal limit and it designed to hit that on the default fan profile, id be worried if it didnt hit that temperature.

had 3 founders editions now their all the same.

So 80c is normal and fine? Still debating to whether to send it back and get a aftermarket version instead or even settle with a gtx 1080 ftw since it's cheaper and I'm only using it at 1440p.

80c will see some throttling but the fan will be a conservative one. If you want to keep temps cooler, I would suggest running MSI Afterburner and setting a 1:1 fan profile, which 30c = 40% - 50c = 50% - 60c = 60% etc. This will keep the card cooler and keep the core clock higher.

Yes the default fan profile is set with this target in mind. IE it will only increase speed to keep below ~83C. Was the same with my reference 970s for what it's worth.

Good to know thank you. In your opinion would I be better off returning it for a refund and waiting for an aftermarket version or just stick with it?

I would return it and get a card with after-market cooling, I found my 1080ti too noisy for my liking. I usually run a card for a few days to a week on the stock cooler before removing to add a waterblock, I didn't make 24 hours with the 1080Ti. Its not only the noise which is an issue but the card was throttling back a fair bit on the stock cooler so really an after-market card will be better again in this area.

A £700+ card is allot to make compromises on for the sake of waiting a few weeks.

Yeah that's the thing, performance wise it's fantastic but the noise is pretty annoying also add in the temps. I just feel disappointed rather than overjoyed which considering this a new graphics card probably tells me that I should return it and wait for an aftermarket version.

Ultimately that is one for you to decide whether it is too noisy or not. I put waterblocks on my cards though :p

personally I love my 1080 Ti FE fan doesn't go above 70% which is tolerable for me and it keeps temps in mid 70s whilst boosting to 1974mhz and 12ghz on the memory. To me was worth getting it early to enjoy the new card instead of waiting and waiting :)

Oh yeah it's a great card, just getting hold of one was like an achievement in itself. For me personally I like to keep noise to a minimum and it just seems a little too loud for my liking. Still unsure if I should send it back and wait for an aftermarket, gonna sleep on it see what I think in morning.

*Update*

Sent it back this morning, should get the refund sometime next week. Now the decision to buy a aftermarket 1080ti when they launch or just get a aftermarket 1080 instead, hmm :/.

I think you did the right thing. :)
+1 Right decision imo.

I understand that impatience can also play a part, but I think the reference blower coolers are really more suited to those that will Waterblock the card or for SLI setups. There are also those that play with headphones and couldn't care less about the fan noise which is fair enough.

Had the stock reference Maxwell Titan shoot right up to 82-84c under gaming load with noise I wasn't impressed with. The reference cooler has improved little since then to say the least. Not for me at these prices but each to their own.

hmm. I hear people say the 1080ti FE is noisey, how much so compared to a 980ti reference? since they use basically the same cooler, albeit the 980ti having a smaller exhaust because of the DVI port. I dont find my 980ti reference that noisy. Kind-of thinking of upgrading to two 1080ti for SLI.
