Im having a series of annoying problems pop up on my laptop which i bought last august, ill have to list them because i can't fix them myself so i turned to the best forum i know!

1) after updating the drivers via the MSI website, the Eco Button and Media Button do not function anymore, obviously this is going to be one for people who use the msi laptops and have had this problem and it really doesnt matter much but i thought id ask

2) Microsoft Office is installed (preinstalled?) but wants a product key, after 19 tries it will be locked out, was it sposed to have office in the first place and if so should it have a Product Key.

3) Windows 7, the laptop came with no windows 7 DVD for reinstallation, just backups, if i backup and restore will i lose my important files is my main question here, as id like the topbuttons to function plus my next problem to be resolved

4)Windows Firewall, i dont know if its on or off, but it says update firewall with reccomended settings, but does nothing if i press the button.

i believe these are the only very minor issues with it, im going to virus scan it now and hope the firewall isnt infected or something, oh also the A button is slightly worn out and doesn't always make contact but thats just a physical thing and cant be helped, worst case ill get a usb keyboard. the laptop itself rocks.

thanks for anyone who can help me!

P.S the firewall is particularly annoying because i believe its blocking traffic between my minecraft server and the outside world! ive port forwarded etc but its jipping me :(

thannnnnnnnnnnnnks!

Hello :)

I have a netbook which came with Microsoft 2010 pre-installed. You can still use it, however its called Microsoft word 2010 Starter and it contains an advert and some mssing icons and stuff.

However if you look back at your box you may find an activation code somewhere inside, maybe on your laptop i dont know. Easiest thing would be to contact where your purchased it from for this specific problem, however for the others, its just some patience and a lot of googling and these forums im afriad.

Goodluck!

haha i bought the laptop on this site you see, its got erm office 2007 installed on it but says after 19 uses it will lock without the product key, couldn't see one with it.

1) Try older drivers if possible?

2) Usually it's just a trial version of Microsoft Office. Looks like you have to buy the full version of it.

3) Should save all your personal files, but I would back them up to a USB pendrive or something similiar just incase.

4) What does it say under Windows Firewall when you go to Control Panel -> Sys & Sec -> Windows Firewall?

1) can't find old drivers on the site, ive differed this to the MSI forums as they may know the problem.

2) thats good to know, just wondered why it was there :P

3) okay shall attempt to save those across to somewhere before restoring, is there a possible way to reset everything to default, it seems to have a fairly serious virus

4) the windows firewall says "update your firewall settings" but this is what happens

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVnV2uC6oZc

a friend told me to run malware bytes and try to remove any viruses, this definately doesn't happen on the other two gx 740s my freinds have!

Restore to factory settings, however i do not know where abouts it is, i would think it would be in the control panel somewhere :)

and are you sure its a virus? use a reputable Anti virus program, and try maybe another, like Norton + MSE (microsoft security essentials), see what happens, do a deep system scan and go from there. Should take about 2-3 hours if you get MSE, well it did on my netbook but it has a lot less power than your laptop.

Goodluck again.

Ok first things first. When you're seeking assistance on a technical help forum frequented by adults - avoid using colours on your text, this isn't Kindergarden, Playschool, you don't need to catch anyones attention. We're already here willing and able, what you need to do is ensure you don't drive people away!

I should explain that I've not got the same model laptop as yourself. I purchased the GX660r - that said however, I spent quite sometime reading this forum www.notebookreview.com and noticed that all the MSI series notebooks that fit into a 'range' are setup more or less the same. So that said, your notebook setup should be the same as for those of us that purchased the GX660 and 660r variants which should help enormously in your search for solutions.

What have you changed recently that caused the errors?

Any reason that you can't just 'wind back' your copy of windows and use it from that point onwards? http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/products/features/system-restore or is whatever you did that's lead to this behaviour classed as 'essential'? By 'essential' I mean you've downloaded some OS updates, Drivers, Patches and that's caused the problems?

1) after updating the drivers via the MSI website, the Eco Button and Media Button do not function anymore, obviously this is going to be one for people who use the msi laptops and have had this problem and it really doesnt matter much but i thought id ask

Which drivers and Why did you update them? The 'Eco Button' driver is the http://global.msi.eu/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=utility&maincat_no=135&prod_no=1999 'system control manager' aiui. Can't you run system restore, then deploy the version of SCM that came with your laptop.

2) Microsoft Office is installed (preinstalled?) but wants a product key, after 19 tries it will be locked out, was it sposed to have office in the first place and if so should it have a Product Key.

As you've already been advised, it was probably a time limited trial. After which you're expected to either pay for it, delete it and move onto something like Open Office www.openoffice.org which is quite an adequate word processor.

3) Windows 7, the laptop came with no windows 7 DVD for reinstallation, just backups, if i backup and restore will i lose my important files is my main question here, as id like the topbuttons to function plus my next problem to be resolved

There should be a link on your desktop called 'User Manual' in there it should explain what the buttons do, where to download your drivers and what happens when you press the 'Restore' button. There should be another icon connected to 'BurnRecovery Help' or similar, which will link to a BurnRecovery.pdf which is located here: "C:\Program Files (x86)\MSI\BurnRecovery\BurnRecovery.pdf"

4)Windows Firewall, i dont know if its on or off, but it says update firewall with reccomended settings, but does nothing if i press the button.

Can't you run System Restore, then just shutdown the windows firewall, then deploy zonealarm free firewall ie; http://www.zonealarm.com/security/en-us/zonealarm-pc-security-free-firewall.htm# therefore circumventing the problem.

cheers for the replies guys, im sorry i used colour, i thought it broke up my paragraphs nicely! that said ill use the bland white text in future, anyway back to the problems.

Ive managed to rectify everything but the Windows 7 reinstall problem, the firewall doesn't respond to anything i want it to do as you can see in the video, i will system restore and see if that fixes it, i scanned with malware bytes (took 10 hours) and it found absolutely nothing, it seems like its just microsoft firewall that is broken :S

*edit*

Just attempted to system restore, 01/03/2011 is the oldest one i can restore to, which is only 4 days ago, so its a pointless endeavor, i cannot figure out what to do now!!

Have you run Windows Update? You've downloaded all the updates both important and optional? If that's not solved the problem, then well you could do what I did when I first received the laptop, it should be pointed out I've been using computers for some years.

When Microsoft first introduced their firewall, there was one piece of advice that I was advised to follow. That being 'don't rely upon Microsoft's firewall' so I chose zone alarm free and have stuck with it even though I've tried a few others throughout that time of course. I've found them all to be more reliable and provide more options. So I suggest you may wish too turn the Windows Firewall to off after installing ZoneAlarm Free: http://www.zonealarm.com/security/en-us/zonealarm-pc-security-free-firewall.htm# t burden off your shoulders I should imagine.

I Hope that goes someway to solving your problem.
