Hi all

I'm not sure whether to put this in the MB or memory section.

Building a pc for my father in law and as usual when you do a favour things go wrong

The system is:
Jeantech Phong 2 case (Best buy in Custom PC magazine for cooling)
Liteon SHM 165P6SDVD/RW
Samsung SH -D162 DVD ROM
Leadtek GeForce 7600GT Extreme 256MB
Mitsumi FA 404M 7 in 1 USB 2.0 Floppy and Media Drive
MSI K9N Platinum nForce 570
Enermax Liberty 500W ELT500AWT
AMD Athlon 64 3500+2.2GHZ Socket AM2
Corsair 2GB DDR2 value Select PC 5300 Dual Channel Kit
Samsung Spinpoint P SP2004C 200GB SATA 2 8MB Cache
+ KB, Mouse monitor

Switched on and full boot with all ok messages and MSI Dbracket LED code reported 4 green lights meaning all ok.

Booted with XP Home in DVD Drive, partitioned and formatted hard disk. Setup started copying files and reported an error that a file could not be copied. Tried again and random error messages appeared about not copying files. Then “blue screen of death” with random “STOP” messages

Tried different DVD drive and same thing happened. Tried my copy of XP home and same thing happened.

Tried alternative SATA cable and same again.

Tried spare SATA HD from my own pc although this time the built pc refused to switch on for more than a second with the sound of relays clicking.

Pressed in all cables to ensure contact and now the pc turns on but does not boot. All fans spinning.

Returned the MB to Overclockers who confirmed faulty MB

I'm getting sick of the sight of the Overclockers reception as this is only one of many items I've had to return

Now on to replacement MB

The system still won't install windows. Now sometimes when I go into the bios screen the system freezes and I have to switch off and on again.

Ran memtest 86 with number one memory stick in Dimm 1 and got 79 errors.

Tried booting with number 2 memory stick in Dimm 1 and the boot failed with 4 beeps and "Ram R/W Test Failed" "Checking NVRAM.." then it froze.

Ran memtest 86 again with number 2 memory stick in Dimm 1 and got 2650 errors.

Tried number 1 stick in Dimm 1 again and got NO errors

Tried both sticks with number 2 stick in Dimm 3 and ran the test again and got 1392 errors.

What the hell is going on?

Has the original M/B corrupted the memory or was the MB and the memory corrupted. Is it the replacement MB faulty or is it the memory?

I've also tried the memory timings on Auto and on 5-5-5-15 as recommended on the Corsair site.

The CPU and case temps are 37 and 35 respectively at idle with ambient room temperature at 25.
