My friend has a MSI KT6V motherboard and just bought a Athlon XP 2500+ Mobile off ebay. The chip must be unlocked (since its a mobile) yet the multiplier won't change (which makes it a bit hard to overclock effectively). I am assuming this must be a problem with his motherboard. But does anyone know of anyway to fix this? A bios update perhaps?

Absolutely yes, the BIOS see's it as a mobile as does CPUID. Also the markings on the CPU seem to bare this out from what I can tell.

I've heard that the MSI KT6V apparently won't allow the CPU multiplier to be changed. I've also heard that there is a socket pin mod that unlocks the multiplier but I can't find any specific info on it. Does anyone know of an article describing how to do this mod?

I have the same CPU and it shows as unrecognised in the BIOS on my DFI infinity. Any attempt to run a default speed has it running at 100x5-1.65

I dont know that motherboard, some old boards needed updating for the later XP processors.

What the code on the CPU

That's similar to what happens with the same CPU in my Nforce 2 based A7N8X-X motherboard. Running as an unknown CPU it starts at 100x7, but its easily changed with that board (I'm running it at 200x14 at the moment). In my friends MSI KT6V the CPU is recognised as a AthlonXP-M and starts out at 133x14 but the board just refuses to allow me to change the multiplier to anything but the default of 14.
