MSI Laptop Problem

One night I left my laptop (MSI GT70 0NE) on and woke up to find it powered off. I switched it on and found it kept going into a repair mode where there's just a black screen and a circle. It keeps doing that then ends up getting the windows 8 bsod saying it must be restarted. From looking online it seems this is quite a common issue and generally can mean either a failed hard drive or windows reinstall required. I put windows 8 on a pen drive to see if I could get anywhere and after loads of attempts it finally booted into a windows 8 reinstall. From there I was able to launch CMD and did a list volume in diskpart. This is what I get:

Volume 0 E DVD Rom
Volume 1 C Data NTFS 680GB
Volume 2 BIOS_Buy NTFS 18GB
Volume 3 D IRM_CCSA_X6 NTFS 29GB

I have tried going to Refresh your PC but it says 'the drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again. If I go to Reset your PC it says Unable to reset your PC. A required drive partition is missing.

I'm not really sure where to go from here. Should I just get a new SSD and load windows onto that? I can't get into any diagnostics but it looks to me like this is a hard drive failure?

Part of my problem is I'm pretty clueless with how SSD's are setup.

This is the spec:

Also, I tried doing an install upgrade but it says I need to log into windows normally before I can do that. Which I cannot do. I'm not that bothered about losing data as important stuff is backed up but I don't want to do a clean installation as I'm not clear which drive it's going to try installing it on? It's not giving me a choice. Needing help please...

If you've got windows on a stick ready to install and not bothered about losing data then I'd just boot into the stick and use command prompt to wipe the partitions and MBR then let the install start a fresh.

I tried to reformat and install windows on the SSD but it gives an error.

If I go into diskpart it just shows the volumes I listed above, the SSDs don't seem to appear.

What if I get something like thisto replace the faulty SSD? Is it just one SSD that's faulty or both? How can I find out? Do the SSD's need to be configured in a special way? Is setting them up as RAID just done in the BIOS? Does it matter if the SSD's are different?

I opened the laptop up and there's currently 2 SanDisk 64gb SSD drives, plus one normal 750GB drive too.

I've wasted far too much time on this. I'm just going to swap out both SSD's and get a Crucial CT256MX100SSD1 256GB MX100 SATA 2.5 Inch 7mm SSD .

If they're 2 in raid it's possible that the RAID config has broken or had a hiccup however should be fine, and also explains why the Windows Installer can't see them, it's because during installation you need to manually provide the raid drivers, so then windows can see the SSD(s).

On the same screen as the one you used to see your drives, you'll see a 'load driver' button, click this and search for the drivers on a USB, you can download them from the MSI website.

If the install still doesn't work refer to their manual to check the RAID config just after the BIOS and make sure it's set up properly like the manual advises.

Hi there,

Is this unit less than 2 years old?

Was it bought in the UK?

If so, please contact our UK support center on :

They will fix this problem for you free of charge.

Unfortunately can't be fixed for free. This laptop is only 18 months old but is a replacement for one I bought three years ago (it almost went on fire).

Also, when I told your company about you they seemed quite confused!

Going to try this. I have bought a 240GB msata SSD but can return it if this works. Thanks :)

Just to advise, I went to a clean install and then load driver and after that the drive appeared so some progress. However, I cancelled out of it I I didn't want to wipe the drive if avoidable (I could do a custom install and keep the files). Now I'm stuck in preparing automatic repair again. It has an issue booting to pen drive

ok custom install is not possible because it wants you to log into windows first. When I try to install to Drive 0 unallocated space 119.2GB it says 'we couldn't install windows in the location you chose. Please check your media drive. Here's more info about what happened 0x80300002"

I guess I'll wait for my new hd?

EDIT - When I go into diskpart it still doesn't show the SSD as a volume?
