MSI P55-GD65 problem/question

Hey guys,
I just want to know has any one had any issues using the OC genie feature ?

Long bit below :p which should explain the issue i have had

Ok well i recently (3/4weeks ago) purchased this board along with

CPU - I5 750 +a Corsair H50
RAM - Corsair XMS3 4GB - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-203-CS&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1517
gfx - sapphire 5870
psu is a Corsair HX 750w
case - CM storm sniper - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-185-CM


anyways installed it all ran fine out the box, and i decided to wait with using the OC genie feature until my pc had been running abit, its been on almost 24/7 since i got it.

CPU idel is 28-30
load after playing CoD MW2 for a few hours it got upto about 40-45.
(always with CPU/rad fan on 50%) case fans on lowest

so today i decided it was time to see if i could get a bit more for my money and tried using the OC genie feature.

Turned it back on and the screen didn't come on with the load screen image and it wouldn't boot so i couldn't get to the bios, it then restarted its self 2 or 3 times, I guessed it was trying to sort out the best settings then i just hung and didn't do anything so i tried to reboot and it just hung again.
So i turned OCg off and it booted up fine. went to bios CPU was at 57 with the CPU fan on full, which i know is well within the tollorance levels

So my question is to any one else with this board whos using this feature, and if they had any issues with it ?

Have you got an aftermarket cooler?

I have tried the OC Genie with the i5. The first time it popped up to 3.7GHz, after a reboot it went down to 3.4GHz. Had no problems with it what so ever. Had you changed any other settings in the BIOS prior to pressing the button?

and no not messed with the bios before clicking. although now when i loadup (oc genie off) my core speed is now 3k im sure it was only 2.6 before clicking the button.




edit: but like i said in my 1st post, once the button was pressed i couldent get to the bios, it would get to the point were the image would come up and u press del. and it would reboot. or hang

Sorry, skim reading FTL!

Reset the BIOS settings to default and have another go. If you processor is running at 3.0 then something is set differently than it should be.
 
I have the same problem with OC genie. Basically the system just keeps rebooting with it enabled. I gave up with it and manually overclocked to 3.8ghz and have been running stable since.

That OC genie has problem with "Channel Well" based power supplies.

Corsair use these. You have a corsair 750w and I have a corsair 850w!!!

Thats weird I also have this problem, with OC Genie enabled it keeps rebooting, then I disable it and it has done what OC Genie should have done (overclocked it automatically) but I turned it off. I also have a Corsair PSU.:rolleyes:

Maybe they might fix it with a bios update?

ive tried doing some manual overclocking doh insted, nothing major yet and im sure the experienced overclockers will be like, "i wouldent even call that an over clock :p"


but ive been trying to disable the "energy save" thing were it changes the multiplier down when idle, but for some reason it wont seem to turn off :/

currently ive only changed the base clock which ive set to 150 with everything else the same which gives me 3ghz. not much i know since people on these forums are getting upto 4ghz but hey im learning and dont want to brake stuff :p

I dont really want to change the voltages due to the shorter life span it would give me ?


anyways this is kinda going away from the motherboard into over clocking. soo if i have any questions or problems about that il start a thread there
 
I`m new to modern overclocking and tried this OC genie on my i5 system and it changed the FSB to 195. In windows I noticed Windows was at 3200 (idling if I remember) but I changed it back. I assume this meant my system was capable of over 4ghz (195*21multipler) ?. One thing I did notice was the ram was running underclocked I think (800 instead of 1600), so I changed it back to the ram XMS defaults which gives me a decent 3360mhz anyway and ram at 1600mhz.
One thing I noticed when I went back to previous settings is Win 7 crashed on bootup. been fine since but after disabling the Genie settings and returning to previous settings Windows 7 didn`t seem overly happy at first for some reason
 
Bah just lost what I was typing due to a 'lost token'?!

I've seen the same thing where OC genie will restart the PC trying to find a stable overclock, I presume. It lowers the settings each time until it has lowered the RAM MHz to a point where it doesnt reach POST after the next restart. I have had the same thing when lowering RAM MHz too much and after exiting BIOS, the computer doesnt get to POST after the restart. The only option is to power off and on.

I guess this is what is causing the hang after OC Genie gets to work. I haven't used the feature since and dabbled in manual overclocking only.
 
OCGEnie is VERY BIOS dependent. On the day-of-release BIOS mine went very well, but as soon as I started updating the BIOS the OCGenie got less and less useful.

Do also bear in mind that your success with OCGenie will depend on your CPU and RAM. People with different CPUs and different RAM configurations will get different results. That's partly the point.
 
This OCGenie thing is a joke, it simply will not work.

I've tried resetting the factory settings for the bios, fail safe settings then pressing the OCGenie button, but it wont boot and keeps restarting.
Is there not a solution to this? MSI need to explain themselves!
 
i'm pretty sure there is a Bio's update to address this problem i keep hearing about this problem.. sorta putting me off buying a GD80 but tbh i wouldnt use the button anyways the new I5 750 are so easy to overclock anyway, I fully exspect to get mine to 4Ghz after i burn the chip there is a guide on youtube you can watch just type in MSI GD80 and it'll show up.

I gave up on the OC genie, when i got it to 3.5ghz my pc just froze, So i disabled it in bios and base clock buttons, now i can overclock my core i5 to a stable 3.6ghz.

I found not useing the OC genie better. You get a much more stable overclock.

No this is really a MSI's own feature and to be honest overclocking Core i5 750 is pretty stright forward.. set the max Voltages that is safe and boot up at 20% under the oc you hear other people getting.. run prime95 for abit watch temps then if stable up the clock do the same check temps if its not getting to hot keep upping the clock till u get a crash or fail on prime then back it off 3 mhz on clock multiplier boot up prime95 again and run it overnight.

did this for my friends core i7 920 we got it to 4.2 Ghz and it's been perfect for the paste 3 months he's had it :/

it was far easier then getting my E5200 stable at 3.8ghz tbh.

Yes I know it is fairly straightforward but I was considering purchasing 8GB RAM and I believe that having this amount of ram can not make you overclock the i5 much?
