MSI R6950 graphics card problems...

I've recently built a computer using an MSI R6950 2PM2D2GD5 graphics card, but only the VGA slot works. I'm not using a HD monitor at the moment, so I don't have a HDMI cable.

On the desktop it's not too bad, but in game the graphics are dreadful, and really struggle.

If I try to use the DVI slot, there is no response from the monitor, or it says 'No Signal'. I've tried reseating the graphics card and checking the power cables are in correctly, but this has made no difference.

Any advice? Thanks

Hi there,

May I ask what monitor you are using and do you have any other DVI cables you can try out?

Also, are you absolutely sure you have you plugged in both 6 pin PCIE power connections from the PSU into the graphics card?

When you say games look dreadful off VGA, what do you mean? Are they running at the native resolution of the monitor? Also, does using applications within windows looks OK?

If it is working properly a VGA connection will look pretty much as good as a digital display connection like DVI or HDMI.

I was trying it with World of Warcraft and it averaged 38fps when still, and dropped to 15fps when I walked around. This was at the native resolution of 1680 x 1050 (wide).

I reseated and ensured both 6 pins clicked in. My monitor is a samsung syncmaster 223bw. At the moment, I would happily return to my ATI radeon HD 4870 =(

It really depends on the monitor and the way it handles VGA. I uses to run two PCs off a Dell 2209WA monitor (same resolution as the OP) one with VGA and one with DVI, the VGA was only slightly worse than the DVI and certainly wasn't much of an issue.

To the OP: yes that does sound like some poor performance, but may I ask what the rest of your system specs are? - WoW is a pretty CPU-heavy game.

When you say graphic "dreadful and struggle", you simply mean poor frame rate?

A faster graphic card won't be much help to you, if you have a slow CPU holding you back in WOW.

I'm pretty sure it's not the CPU, as an older graphics card worked fine. But the specs of my system are as follows:

Gigabyte Z68X-UD3P Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 motherboard,
Corsair XMS3 4GB DDR3 memory,
an Intel Core I5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) socket LGA1155 processor,
and a Corsair 800W Gaming PSU.

WoW used to work much better then it does, on an older system...the graphics are much, much worse then they were, and the fps are worse too.

in terms of diagnostics you should first do a gfx benchmark (heaven 3dmark etc) to check out your score and WoW is a pain in the ass in terms of performance as it can be a number of factors slowing it down.

Have you tried moving out your WTF and addons folder. Then loading the game to create a brand new UI to check out if it's your config / addons causing this poor performance?

If you download and run the heaven benchmark, with default settings in the app, post your fps and score.

My 6950 reference scored about 1700 at stock with 67.4 fps. See how yours compares.

Edit - At 1920x1080 btw.

Yeah it's a completely fresh install of WoW. I haven't tried anything like 3d mark, but I got a serial code with the card so I'll download that now and post my scores here in a second.

Thanks for your help so far.

Okay, I set it at 1920x1080 too. My score was 1064, and fps 42.3. Min was 10.2, max 89.3.
