hi all im looking at maybe getting two msi Rx 480 and i want to crossfire them, im pretty new to all of this is it done through software or via cable.
Any input would be great. Thanks in advance

All you need to do is uninstall your current drivers, install your 480's and install the latest AMD 480 drivers.

Tried crossfire once and to be honest for the money I would buy an Nvidia 1070.

I've done crossfire 4870, 5870/5970, 7970 and 290. I completely agree with you. The only person I'd recommend crossfire to is someone that constantly has a 1 year back log on games, even then it's not always great.

To be honest the fastest single card you can afford is a better bet. Imo, 1070 is recommended over two 480s for about the same outlay. Mainly because you'll have no issues getting all the performance, all the time. It can be very frustrating (from experience) being let down by dual GPU compatibility in your favorite new game. Two 480s are faster when they are scaling well mind. What resolution are you at out of curiosity?

I was looking for running 1080p, running a msi r9 290oc which just doesnt seem up to it anymore its just a 2g card

My experience of Crossfire is positive. But I have a massive backlog of games, meaning the games I play are almost always 6 months+ old and have a decent Crossfire profile.

what card would u recommend for a amd build??

AMD card and CPU?

I'd say the RX480 but I think you said your overclocked 290 wasn't up to the task? Seems a bit odd, it should deal with most things very well, with what is it struggling?

With AMD CPUs it's actually better to buy a Nvidia card due to sub-par single threaded performance and driver overheads in old APIs, DX12/Vulcan isn't a problem. There have been improvements recently but there's still a gap. This may have additional issues in crossfire scenarios with AMD CPUs, again, API dependent.

There's also the wait for Vega option but we don't know for sure what that's going to offer, even theoretically. Unless I've missed an update somewhere.

I'm waiting for Vega myself but am also tempted by 480 crossfire. I'm also holding out for Zen before I decide between that and skylake, so no rush for me.
