Hi guys, hoping you can assist me with a problem i have with this 6970... had it for around a year now, only started to have problems with my pc crashing to different coloured screen with stripes down it. The card temperatures were going above 102c during a kombuster test, pc would crash while playing bf3 etc. Luckily i had a 7770 lying around and was not getting the same problem. So I sent the card back to overclockers to be told the card was fine...

Does the msi twin frozr 3 usually get this hot within 2-3 mins (above 100 at full load) i have good air flow in my case (corsair 650d). Here is a pic http://i46.tinypic.com/2w556hl.png

Also, this graphics card I've read is meant to be fairly quiet compared to some... this thing is extremely loud during games, I have a friend who has crossfire of these cards and are not as loud as my one

go into CCC and check the fan profile what are they set at. Is it overclocked beyond factory? if so remove and reset to factory settings.

it's worth a check any way.

Those temps are just not right at all. I had a reference 6970 and didn't see those sort of temps ever, with bad air flow and diring a 6+ hour BF3 session on ultra. And reading reviews online the cooler should make a better job than that.

Perhaps the cooler has become loose, or is not seated correctly. Are the fans spinning? Check all screws on rear and ensure they are tight

How long have you had it?

If it gets that hot i would take a stab and say the thermal compound on it has gone or maybe its clogged with dust.

Have you tried cleaning it?

You know... when i got my 6970 back from overclockers i did notice the cooling unit was a bit wobbily, before i sent the card to overclockers it wasn't but i was still having these temps and crashes. I don't really want to take the card apart or anything, I would much rather have a replacement in case i break a warranty or something...

-Would this break warranty taking off the cooler and applying thermal compound?

depends if you break any seals otherwise they wouldn't know. Possibly would depends on manufacturer. check for dust

Take a photo of the condition of it returned to you. If it is not in a 'useable' when you took delivery from RMA then get in touch
