MSI X570 Unify – RAM Shows as “Unknown” in BIOS (Lexar DDR4-3200, 5700X3D)

Hi all,


I’ve just finished putting together a system with an MSI X570 Unify (AM4) and I’m seeing a strange memory issue. The RAM often shows up as “unknown” in BIOS, even though it boots and runs fine. By default, it shows DDR4-3200 and I can enable XMP/DOCP Profile 1 without stability problems. Zorin Os detects the memory correctly as well.


Specs:

  • Motherboard: MSI X570 Unify
  • CPU: Ryzen 7 5700X3D
  • RAM: Lexar THOR DDR4 16GB Kit (2x8GB) 3200MHz CL16-18-18-38, 1.35V (LD4BU008G-R3200GDXG) 2 kits 32GB total
  • GPU: AMD RX480 (temporary), Radeon 9060XT 16GB ready to install later
  • BIOS: AMI 7D13v1G1 (Beta, 2025-09-23)

What I’ve tried so far:


  • Reseating the RAM
  • Testing sticks individually
  • Updating to the latest BIOS (currently on beta)

Zorin OS reports the RAM correctly, but BIOS labeling it as “unknown” has me concerned. Is this just a BIOS bug with the X570 Unify, or could it point to a compatibility/hardware issue with my Lexar kit?


Has anyone else run into this on the Unify, and is there a fix/workaround?

If it is only happening in the BIOS and it otherwise works fine, I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks Tetras I was just worried, I did look on the msi website for the compatibility list but Lexar isnt on it. So im guessing that maybe the issue

So long as the BIOS is reading and retaining the important part (the speed and timings) I'd assume that's just a label and has no consequence.

If it forgets anything important, e.g. it ends up with your memory running at stock after a cold boot (probably 2133-2666) then I'd be more worried about it.

You could have a look with hwinfo as that shows detailed information about memory.
 
This is likely a cosmetic issue and not a functional one.

You could run CPU-Z and confirm it can read the DIMM and SPD profiles. But the board can already read the SPD if it can activate EXPO profiles, anyway, I suppose.

If your RAM is runnning at the correct speed and timings, and everything is stable, I wouldn't worry about it.
