Hi,
I am fairly new to this part of the motherboard. I have built computers without really needing to know what it does, or why it's there.

My new comp is based around an MSI X58M motherboard, with one of the termperatures showing up as 70 degrees celc. I was shocked to see so looked into it. It sounds like this it the Northbridge.

What does this even do?
Do I need to make sure this is cooler,... and how do I cool it?

Thank you so much for your help, it's much appreciated... hopefully my computer won't be toast :).

MSI X58M
Core i7 920
Radeon 4870 1gb
6 GB DDR3 OCZ Gold.
Corsair TX650 PSU
2 * 1tb WD Green ( SSD soon? )

Oh and.. non of it is overclocked, and it's using the stock CPU cooler ( for now,.. considering a Corsair H50 when I get a SSD if I do )

My other temps of core 1 - 4 are all on 47 degrees. Any advice on a really good cooler under £70 would be great, getting some mixed reviews on the H50.

I wouldn't be worried about the temperature of the Northbridge, they usually run hot. I think the chips are usually fine to something like 105c or even higher. The northbridge basically sends data between the cpu and the faster bits of the pc, like the ram and graphics cards. I know my old motherboard's northbridge ran upwards of 80c when under load. You could get a spot fan and point it at the northbridge if you are worried about it.

I think i'll do exactly that. Thanks for your help and advice Lord Fibuster. At least I know my comp isn't going to go up in smoke any time soon!
Thanks again!

I've just opened up the case to look at where it is located etc. It's actually located in a place which would be pretty much un-accessible if I was to install a second graphics card ( which I intend to in the future ).
Thats if.. the northbridge is the thing that says "MSI" on the top of it? The graphics card (4870 ) is very wide in my build and i'm presuming if I use crossfire i'd have to use the same card again.

I'd suggest buying a spotcool and pointing that at it (it being the big metalic heatsink between the first PCI-e slot and the CPU) - on lowest speed setting it is fairly quiet....

If you require further cooling after that then you can replace the heatsink - but the sptcool should do the job.

oh - the spot cool can also be moved around the case so that you can actually find the source of the 70C temp - as it may not be the northbridge - I would think it is though - my only concern being that the Northbridge for i7's are fairly simple affairs as "old school" Northbridge functionality, memory controller, has been migrated to the CPU.

After googling for a while i'm pretty sure its the northbride... well I hope so now!
Thanks a lot for the advice, I will get a spot fan as it seems the best way, and i'll aim it pushing the air towards my top fans blowing out if I can.

If it is the northbridge, is it likely to get hotter with an overclock? I've just overclocked to 3.6Ghz (From 2.6), and it may well be running a lot hotter. I need to keep an eye on it anyway.

Thanks for the advice, i'll let you know how it goes.
