Ok I built a new pc recently and have been having problems getting my usb's on the motherboard to work. I installed windows which was a nightmare as it would pick up my keyboard and mouse up in the bios fine but as soon as windows set up started, they stopped working. I then ordered a ps/2 connection keyboard which allowed me to get windows installed. But now I'm having issues with the usb ports, for example, both usb mouse and keyboard will be dead with no lights, but if i restart they will light up but no function. I'm still having to use the ps/2 keyboard. When I put in an Ethernet cable I get nothing, tried putting a monitor into the slot on motherboard and no luck. Really unsure what the problem is. Could my mobo be faulty? Or need a bios update? I've installed everything from the CD that came with the mobo. Like I said, in bios it seems fine but once windows starts, everything stops. I have tried all ports and am making sure to use 2.0 slots, I've also made sure that legacy mode is enabled etc. Any help would be muchly appreciated.

Operating system is windows 10 64bit
Mobo is msi z97 gaming 5
Cpu i7 4790k

Any other info needed let me know.

If it only has issues within windows, then try installing/reinstalling the USB Drivers for the Hubs, also delete the mouse and keyboard in device manager then turn off your PC with the power button (normally, dont hold). After startup the drivers will be reinstalled automatically.

ps. also make sure that your keyboard and mouse are on separate hubs (1 hub usually is a set of 2 ports together) also remove any other USB devices you have connected while you troubleshoot this.

Hope this helps, let me know how it goes

Sorry I missed the part about installing windows in the first post. I'll blame it on the time of day. :p

If you're able to get in to windows with a ps2 kb+m, you should be looking at device manager (right click the start button to access it). If usb/other devices aren't being detected properly, they should show with yellow exclamation marks.

Yes, i can access device manager and it shows usb's and one of those have a yellow exclamation mark and the rest don't.

I had a thing similar to this once on an old system running a new install of XP, everything worked apart from any usb mice I plugged in, keyboards worked so did my xbox 360 pad. A fresh install fixed all issues, as a last resort you could try that, maybe the install is corrupted some way. Try a fresh download of windows, a pain in the XXX I know but if it fixes the usb or not at least you will know.
Good luck

Tried a full re-install of windows using a cd this time. Installation went fine but again still i'm left with no usb function at all. Its almost like everything that comes out of the back of the motherboard isn't working at all. I thought i would get some sort of light even when an ethernet cable had been inserted but nothing. When i went into device manager i took a picture of my usb's https://gyazo.com/116bb943daa0ad3935c40f11bf442171 .. what i notice is i don't have any labelled "intel" which i've seen others that are named that. Not sure what to do at this point as i've tried about everything. Could the motherboard be faulty?

Why are you using legacy mode? Thats for XP. All usb's should work with z97 and win 10 no probs, maybe try a bios update if you havn't already done so.

Also check in bios usb options for full initialisation at boot, most boards set to partial.

Mines a bit funny since upgrading to w10.
But I'm using wireless kb and mouse connected to a usb2 hub (powered) connected to the monitors usb 2 outlet, monitors usb3 connected to mb rear usb3 via 3m cable.
On cold boot no kb or mouse reset by power button they come back.Original win7 install with usb devices plugged in directly was fine, with default mb settings.
As above poster says I think there's a fault.

Wah heyyy!! After a week of nothing but stress and trying about everything i read online i finally got the problem sorted. The motherboard was indeed faulty. New one came today and i installed it and everything worked first time, didn't have to touch the bios or anything. Now i can get back to gaming without this on my mind 24/7 lol. Thank you all very much for your help!
