I have been attempting to track down a cheap Msi rx480 for my wife to crossfire now the 580 is out and I have found two things: firstly, these cards have vanished off all store shelves (understandably due to 580) but the ones that are out there on ebay and a select few left with retailers all have seen significant price hikes. Have I missed something? Part of me wants to find a news story where this card has some special overclocking power which would attract these increases.
Im certainly not in the market to be paying close to £300 for one, I was hoping to snag one for closer to £150 now second hand.

I think it's a case of they stop making them due to the 580 so the few left go up in price.

99% sure you can use any 480 though? If mem speeds are different it uses the slower.

Any 480 can be crossfired with any other 480 - AMD cards are even fine to run at different clock & memory speeds, although some people have mentioned on older cards that performance is "jerkier" than when they're running the same clocks.

You should be able to crossfire a 580 with a 480, as they're the same core but I'd wait for someone to confirm (AMDMatt?) before spending cash as I haven't tried it myself to confirm.

The price rises are likely be down to alt coin miners, particularly for Ethereum and zcash. They are either as good as or better than the RX5xx series at mining, but less money so they get snapped up fast.

To be fair if you really want more performance upgrade the card.

Get a 2nd hand GTX 1070 or wait to see what AMD have coming up.

Yeah I would prefer to upgrade the card, I just like to keep an eye on prices and I was shocked when I saw how expensive they have become. Ill just wait for the Gtx 2080 or whatever it will be called and let her inherit my 1080.
