Right the problem,

When downloading in Opera it tends to freeze and crash. If I re open opera and goto the download tab it will crash again.

CPU Usage is high but task manager doesn't say what it is.

I got Process Explorer which shows that MsMpENG.exe is hogging A LOT of resources, around 50%+ at times of my CPU.

It appears that its to do with security essentials scan but I have no idea how to stop this.

Some people have said to add MSSE to its own exclusion list but this doesn't appear to have worked.

Anyone here had similar issue? Its very frustrating!

i had this problem last week. i had MSMPENG.EXE running at 60%.
i did try the solution below (adding exceptions to scan in mse) and it has worked for me. :)

The 3 PC's I looked at today were running at 100% CPU. I manually killed off the process and all went back to normal, at least untill the next re-boot.

I'm glad to hear it did the trick :D I'll apply the fix tomorrow.

I found the earlier version of MSE to hog the CPU but pretty sure the latest one was okay.

The latest version also hogs resources on high volume folders - This is an ongoing bug with no hope of being fixed.

It's a bug that's been reported since BETA, I am in the ongoing BETA too.

High volume folders as in folders with a large number of executables and compressed files. When you browse to them or access them, MSMPENG.exe uses high amounts of CPU and HDD Disk I/O suffers.

Thanks for the information and link to the demo clip.

Is it only folders with executables and compressed files?

Should there still be such a problem if the folders aren't being browsed?

The reason for asking is that I experienced it today on a PC which is just running a POS application.

Could I over come this by excluding the folder the POS app uses e.g. Transaction & Logs?

Regards

I only have that one large folder but yeah you could exclude it but then anything you put in there will not be scanned so it's not ideal for exclusion.

It's not a bug that should be there in the first place though so on that basis I do not use or recommend MSE to people when asked for an AV package. I recommend AVAST with regular scans of MalwareBytes and Spybot as well as the occasional online scan of TrendOnline.

I agree with you that it clearly is a bug that somehow got in, but if MS want people to use it or carry on using it then they're surely going to fix it?

Which version of Avast do you use?

Version 5.

It just seems MS would rather release it and have the bug affect a handful of people and deal with it whenever they feel like it.

I use MSSE for ages and it had been fine until recently.

Also save downloads to desktop in Opera which has recycle bin on it and thats it so theres no high volume folder for it to scan there.

I shall take a look at Avast though as I have removed MSSE now and not had a single issue with pc.

Main reason I like MSSE was due to it low resource use and it was relatively quiet. Kaspersky use to be o.k but found it was so bloated in later versions.

Well had a look at another PC running MSE, and for some reason after each boot it doesn't appear in the taskbar?

Can only get to the configuration window if I kill off MSSECES.EXE, then it appears in the taskbar even after being closed?

Quite a few bugs and glitches in MSSE I've noticed. On my WinXP netbook 50% of the time after boot the MSSE icon will be red in the task tray and I'll get a security alert saying I'm not protected. On my Win7 desktop if I'm playing a game and MSSE checks for an update then it continually minimizes the game until the update is installed. Very frustrating.
