MSN and AOL, is there compatibility problems?

Ive got a friend who is trying to talk to me on msn, but they cannot get it to work, both with the client and the webmessenger, is there something stopping them that they need to do, is this a known problem or is my friend a total idiot?

i cant really understand why they cannot get logged in.
