I have added other people onto my msn, they are showing as offline on the contact list. However if i click on their name and start a conversation, i can talk to them and they can talk to me.

And if I sign into Windows messenger, I can then see them online. I just can't see them online on MSN messenger (latest version with MSN plus).

What is causing this and how do I fix it?

Nothing much new in 8.1 from what I can really see, apart from the contact info view thing
messenger plus supports it also been using it for a while now :)

This is possible if they are appearing offline, they can still talk to you, vice versa.

Narh, this other person is online, i am talking to her now. She can see my status as online but her status to me is not even offline. In fact, the top of the chatbox says

"X is not in my contact list, click here to add him or her now"

I click it and nothing, that message stays there.

read the post " And if I sign into Windows messenger, I can then see them online." :)

he can see them online in windows messanger ;)

My guess.

It's something to do with her ISP or whoever provides her email service.

Maybe a change of email addy might sort it.
