I'm currently having a problem with MSN messenger beta 8 - when I launch it and start typing my username it locks up. The field where I'm entering this goes blank - but a few seconds later it completes with what I've typed.
Then when I ok it I get a message saying service not available - error code 8004888d

Looking around on google this is related to the cryptographic service - and suggestions are to restart it - I've done this with no luck.

This may or may not be related to a spyware or virus - i've run spybot, adaware and avg and still get the problem.

Possible related to this I was unable to open the google homepage in i.e. 7 beta 2- uninstalling back to 6 i still got the problem - but doing a reset defaults - fixed the problem with not opening google.
However when I go to hotmail.com and try to sign in - I get page unavilable - however in firefox I've had no problems at all.

Various suggestions involve using gpedit.msc - but with XP home this isnt available.

Any ideas?

Yes - someone of these forums infact via the beta invite thread - it had been working fine - which suggests spyware to me - but weith adaware an spybot (both up to date) not picking anything up it seems odd.

You've got some major issues there. I would personally recommend a reload because of the amount of issues your having, if your adiment on not reloading, check the services that are running in the background, run a better virus scanner through your system and make sure you haven't got any firewalls etc blocking msn ports etc.

Well when I get in from work I'll try avast - see if that picks anything up and have anyother search for solutions - I'm guessing its all down to one problem - given its only msn services that seem to be affected.

Cheers for your advice tho.
