Does anyone know any software that can get on to MSN runs on Macs and or Linux and can handle specials emoticons (i.e. aren't in the standard set)

i use Mercury Messenger on my macbook and cannot recommend it enough, supports my iSight straight away, uses custom emotions etc., yet to find anything wrong with it tbh.

Mercury's functionality is great but damned that's ugly!

Anyone suggest something between the two? Useable and doesn't look like Anne Widicomb?

I use GAIM (2.0.0beta5) on Linux, which has an option of installing extra smiley themes, though I'm quite happy with the default ones. Supports MSN, AIM, IRC, Yahoo and some others :)

You can download cutom icons sets from Adium's site, I'm sure you can add your own custom icons to the program. Since MS release of OS X messenger, I've stuck with it, eventhough it doesn't support internet conference - I use skype for that.
