Posting this on behalf of a friend (I use macs :p)

My sister, for reasons known only to her, decided it would be a great idea to accept and open a random ZIP attachment sent to her on MSN.

img_583_jpg.zip was the file and apparently on opening it 'it just did nothing'

HiJack this hasn't spotted anything, though I can't remember the decent analysis site for it.

In the process of downloading spybot and adaware...

anything else worth getting to try and hunt it down or find out what it is? putting the file name in google get nothing at all, not a single result.

Any help would be great, I really really really don't have time to sit down and backup/format/reinstall that whole PC .

Can anyone give any help?

Ta

Sinc.

www.hijackthis.de, I find to be the best Hijack this analysis site.

I also like to use Microsoft's Windows Defender, Just for the Software Explorer tool. To view what exactly is running and end it as needed. Not as a Spyware checker.

Other than that Spybot and Ad aware are perfectly fine.

Anti Virus wise, If the computer has none, AVG or Avast are both free.

Which just popped up informing me that an email was blocked by the outgoing server, along with several dozen more.

I've pulled the network cable out but i'm guessing this was it trying to pass itself on a bit more?

Keylogger sending logs back to it's origin? Get AVG

Another vote for kaspersky one of the best AV's out there

As for Spybot and Adware I wouldnt bother

despite the silly name "SuperAntispyware" is one of the best ASW progs around, the free version has a full on demand scan and should remove most malware etc

TBF Symantec Corporate is actually pretty good. Not to be confused with Norton. it's not a memory hog, Does it's job, and the important thing, The definitions are up there with the best, Kaspersky and NOD32

And I disagree with this. I would bother with Spybot and Adaware as both are fantastic pieces of software, That between them, Clean computers more thoroughly than any one piece of software I've tried, Including Superantispyware.

Fair play, and i do agree with running two AS if possible,i just dont recommend Spybot and Adware for the reasons that I have found adware and spybot have missed many malware samples that Super Antispyware detects, ASW along with Kaspersky have cleaned more pc's for me than the Symantec,Adware, spybot combo

Just so you know, I wasn't being mean, I re read what i put and it sounds harsh :p

I guess different methods are always going to work in different situations. As not all systems are going to have the same malware to combat. :)
