I'm in the market for a new Mountain Bike. I intend buying from a local bike shop so I have some form of after sales support. I was going to purchase a Giant Terrago, however none of the shops local to me stock giant.

The nearest Giant Dealer is 25 miles away. I was originally going to go there by train, pick up the bike and cycle home (I used to ride this route quite frequently), however I've just done my back in (Sciatica) and know that cycling for that kind of distance will do me no good at all.

One shop in my town only seemed to do Marin bikes, and for my budget of £450 it would appear that I can only get a very low range Marin, and the other bike shop does Ridgeback and Genesis Bikes.

I've seen the Genesis Core 1.0, which is just within budget. Looks a nice bike, however I'm unable to find any reviews on it. The specs of the bike can be downloaded in PDF format from www.genesisbikes.co.uk or http://www.evanscycles.com/product.jsp?style=71050

Does this look a sound bike?

Cheers

I did originally think of that, but the trains round here are allways overcrowded. Don't fancy putting my brand new bike in the bikewell to either get scratched to pieces or nicked

another thing is try it in the shop, order online for home delivery. A bit cheeky but you will get what you want in the end. But you wont have the aftersale service. Thou tbh, its not that hard if you treats it right.

For that money i would get a carrera fury from halfords. :eek: Rst forks..........deore rear mech......wtf. You get Tora forks,X7 gearing,truvativ crankset and some hydraulic brakes for good measure on the fury. :eek:

Could anyone advise what's wrong with that bike for the price.

According to the Genesis website it has ;

Suntour Hydraulically dampened fork (with lockout)
Deore Rear Mech, Accera front deraulier
Hayes Hydraulic Disks

Exact spec here http://www.genesisbikes.co.uk/index.php?bikeID=67&show_bike=TRUE

I think Evans Cycles must have got the spec slightly wrong.....

I like the look of the Carrera, but it is a little over budget, and £450 is pushing it.

The drivetrain and forks are poor, and by "poor" I mean awful. For £450 I'd expect at least an LX rear mech, Deore front, LX shifters and some reasonable Rock Shox/Manitou/Marzocchi forks. Hydraulic disc brakes aren't something I'd look for on a pre-built bike as manufacturers tend to put inferior types on to save money. Just because it says "hydraulic" doesn't mean they're good brakes.

So its between deore/acera drivetrain,RST forks and hayes SOLE brakes....the worst brakes in the last century......or X7 drivetrain,Tora forks and semi decent two piston tektro hydros that come in at £80 an end. :confused:
