Whats the best MTU/RWAIN (?) settings to use, I read somewhere that altering these can improves speed/stability of the line.

I think the standard MTU in BT's ipstream is 1500.... some find varying settings all the way down to about 1432 better, you really need to just try it out.

http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks/MTU - All about MTU settings.

&

http://www.dslreports.com/faq/5793 - How-to for setting it correctly.

Will no doubt help you out. - Dont forget to set it both on your router, AND on your computers for best efficiency. it wont have any effect just changing it on your computer. (I dont think modems can have the MTU set on them, so computer is all you need to change).

Hope this helps,
Alex

Nearly all consumer broadband products specify an MTU of 1500, but there are some companies that specify different for there networks.

F2s in believe lease there services of Easynet, whom i believe use an MTU of 1500 also.

BT Wholesale for example suggest that an MTU of 1458 is is the optimal setting for devices on there DSL network

1500's the recommended setting for BTw as well (unless you're using PPPoE) - there used to be a problem with using 1500 (which is probably what that page is referring to), but it's long since been fixed.

You might see a (tiny) improvement tweaking your MTU and RWIN, but it's hardly worthwhile. The defaults have been fine for me anyway - some users at the upper end of the ADSL2+ setups might get an advantage though.

It certainly isn't going to improve the "speed/stability of the line", especially not the stability.

Where "everyone" = 2 posts in the last month.
Older posts suggests Nildram's playing around, though if you've got path MTU discovery enabled, it still doesn't matter :p
