Much performance change from 3200 to 4000?

haven't been in the upgrade lark for ages now but think i might upgrade now. I have currently got a AMD Athlon 64 3200 SKT939 on my shuttle, not overclocked or anything. Would i notice much difference if i did a straight swap for a AMD 64 4000+?

Cheers

in my opinion get a cheap x2 939 off of ocuk or another etailer. i changed from a 3000+ to a 3700+ . i saw a little bit of a performance increase. The i bought a cheap x2 and wow the differnece is great, to start off with i thought this is slower but when i started video encoding, decoding and using multithreading applications i was gob smacked,.

yeh it is also a socket 939. what cooler do you have a the moment ? thats the other thing you might have to change for temp reasons ! but apart from that it should work no problem.

If yopu post your full spec on this thread someone else may be able to help you as well as i dont know a great detail on shuttles. sorry

Cheers. Just been researching on my shuttle and it seems too much hard work to get the dual core to work with my shuttle :(

I don't really want to be dealing with the hassle so might just opt for the 4000 instead. Plug and play from the sounds of it.
PC is a Shuttle XPC SN95G5V2
AMD Athlon 64 3200+
Geil value RAM 2 x 512 3200

Stick with the 3200+ tbh if you're not going to go at least x2. The 4000+ is just four hundred Mhz faster and the extra 512k cache won't make a huge difference, i assume it'll not be getting overclocked?

I've just upgraded my sn95g5 from an a64 3500+ and x800 xt pe to a x2 4800+ and x1950 pro (512mb), i'd say it's the best upgrade i've ever done - all games run at max settings (1650 x 1080).

You just need to make sure you have the latest bios.

Did you have to upgrade your BIOS at all for the dual core to work? If so which one did you use? Assuming yours is a V2 shuttle as well? I might just bite the bullet and get the X2 3800+ or 4200+ now then, however don't really want to fork out the extra for the retail version on OcUK, shame they don't do the 3800 in OEM.

the cooling in that shuttle is adequate, very very adequate.
Thought the x2s were fully compatible with the V2s in latest bios? My v2 fried a few months ago so havnt kept up with much of it.

I've got the v1, i think some of the early bios's didn't fully support the latest chips - i checked with some other sff forums and quite a few v1 users confirmed the x2 ran ok with the latest bios.
I'm not sure of the bios number i'm running but if you just update to the latest you'll be ok.

Mine works great, no probs.

Hope this helps.

Will a x2 CPU fit into my older SKT939 board then? its a shuttle SN95G5.
SNG95G5 V1's do not officially support the X2 processor. V2's and V3's are fine. I have a V2 running a dual core Opteron without issue.

Check your motherboard version.

The above post from 555buk is wrong concerning the sn95g5 v1...

BIOS Version: SN95S1XB
