Much Speed, Many Horse Powers

A good article, will make a lot of people consider petrols instead of mindlessly going for a filthy diesel.
The new 1.0l turbos really do have decent performance, the Focus I had a go in felt more like the torque of a 2l NA, it doesn't feel chronically underpowered like the 1.0l displacement would suggest.

Indeed :)

Yesterday afternoon I drove the new Astra with the 1.0 105PS which does 0-60 in 10.5s, 99gm and 64-65mpg (depending on wheel size). While the noise was a little rough compared to the 4 cylinder petrols, I was very impressed. I reckon for most people's uses (given the old 1.6 115PS was the volume petrol engine) this is the perfect engine for the car. The significant weight savings in the new car make such a difference to the performance, and to the agility and handling. Quality is excellent too.

In diesel form it also won the What Car group test

They do when warm but sound a bit diesely when cold, must be the mis-balance

Either way I like them, good solution

If I worked in a city and required a small car I'd consider a 1litre turbo'd car, such as the Fiesta Ecoboost. That's impressive mind, a car with 125hp or 140hp capable of 0-60 less than 9s and still achieve fantastic mpg results.

Give me a straight or V configuration engine - with six or more cylinders. Over any of these weak ass engines.

They are hardly designed to replace big powerful engines are they so it's a pointless comparison to make?
IMO the 1l turbo is better in all aspects than a 1.6 NA they are meant to replace.

Here's hoping. I can't wait for diesel to be banned in cities.

Fair cop, I was on about the 1l brigade though. 330i has a 2l unit doesn't it? Probably more muscular than the old 3l unit and more economical?

They should start making small v8s or v12s. A 1.6 v12 :D

If you have doubts about small turbo engines though, try a Fiesta ST.

All big engined mainstream cars seem to be knocking down the cc and a turbo (or 2) did Audi do it with the rs6 and ble with m3/5 and obviously most recently Porsche (although I think macans are already all turboed)

I think the 3 cylinder units sound much nicer than 4 bangers, a bit like a 6 only a bit off-beat.

I find the parents car comical as it has an off-beat thrum as you use its pitiful breathless engine, for you to then look at the speedo and find you've hit 30. :p

330i? Pah, 340i anyday. What was wrong with 30 BMW?!

edit: Try an R56 Cooper S if you feel they can't be fun. Average 38.5MPG for my useage, mostly straight roads, not huge journeys so won't be too warm (its like having a hole in the tank if you only do short journeys). Some right foot usage.
